To the surprise of organizers, the eviction was halted and ABC No Rio was offered 156 Rivington Street for $1 if they could show that it was a viable community center and that they could raise the funds to renovate the facility.
I was invited back to help to defend No Rio in late 1994 when those involved in running the place began to fear the City was not going to honor a stipulation agreement that had been signed, and would try to evict again.
I think what makes ABC No Rio especially unique and important is a sort of working atmosphere of openness, informality and spontaneity that we've created, or more accurately, that has emerged over the years, in which artists, musicians, performers, as well as activists and the public at large can meet, collaborate, and "educate" one another.

No, 20 years ago you could not have predicted that either the ArtCall or ABC No Rio would find themselves in the situations they are in.
ABC No Rio, in that they bring their artistic pool of services to anyone, and ArtCall in that they are providing 'bleeding edge' technological advances to the artists.
No Rio was many of the things she stood for the most, arts, community improvement, and less noise.

This year ABC No Rio is celebrating its 25th anniversary and the finale of a year long series of events is their 25th Anniversary Gala Benefit & Silent Auction, which is this Thursday, 20th October from 6-10 PM.
This protest got Rio a tremendous amount of publicity and in subsequent negotiations the city gave the artists 156 Rivington Street, the present day location of ABC No Rio.
The overall mission of ABC No Rio is to have activists be more socially aware of the politics of culture and vice versa for the artists.

The Case of The Vanishing Van ABC No Rio is an abandoned building on the Lower Lower East Side of Manhattan, in a neighborhood that's mostly hispanic and very poor, but for nearly a year, it's been the home of the only real hardcore scene New York City has known.
Most of all, there's no club owner or booking agent making all the decisions; the shows are run by a collective of fans, musicians, and writers.
If that isn't what a "scene" is all about, then I don't know what is. Now the drawback to ABC No Rio is that it's small, and the shows aren't advertised in the newspapers; the regulars know about them, and spread the word with flyers.

But the sleek environs was proof of how determined No Rio is to raise funds to preserve and win title to the dilapidated tenement at 156 Rivington Street that it has occupied for two and a half decades.
Many may have thought No Rio saved in 1997, when after years of heady protest, the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development agreed to turn over the building for a dollar as long as No Rio came up with the funds to renovate it.
“No Rio is the only place where you can go in and do a show about whatever you want,” said 30-year-old Vandana Jain, a Queens native and member of No Rio’s board of directors whose own work explores the intersection of advertising and religious symbology.

On a Friday in April shortly before 1 p.m., there was no way inside ABC No Rio, the art and activism hangout on New York’s Lower East Side that lends its kitchen to Food Not Bombs.
A city parks sign that once belonged to ABC Playground — “No Rio” was painted in between the two words — was wedged between two rusty window bars, but so much of the sign was suspended in air that it seemed a minor gust might dislodge it.
The group left ABC No Rio at around 4:15 p.m., pushing the cart packed with a tray of stuffed peppers, a bucket of leftover stuffing, a tub of split pea soup, some plastic bowls, plates and forks and an industrial size trash bag full of bread.
