Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Originally developed for aircraft, ABS basically works by limiting the pressure to any wheel which decelerates too rapidly.
ABS allows the driver to steer during hard braking, which allows you to control the car much better.
The advantage of ABS is that the brakes on the wheels with good traction can be used to the fullest possible amount, even if other wheels lose traction.

SPI: About the Industry: Definitions of Resins
ABS was introduced to the market in 1948, primarily as a result of activities that had taken place during the war years in the development of synthetic rubbers.
ABS possesses outstanding impact strength and high mechanical strength, which makes it suitable for use in tough consumer and industrial products, including: appliances, automotive parts, pipe, business machines and telephone components.
Typical uses for epoxy-glass reinforced plastics are in aircraft components, filament wound rocket motor casings for missiles, pipes, tanks, pressure vessels and tooling jigs and fixtures.

Since four-wheels ABS prevents all wheels from skidding, it allows you to steer the vehicle and still maintain braking.
ABS SAFE prevents you from controlling the movement of your wheels (and your steering) if your car starts to swerve or skid.
ABS SAFE conform to U.S. wheel slip brake control system road test SAE J46, and National highway traffic safety administration (DOT)49 code of the federal regulations CH.V (10-1-87) 571.105~ SA.

The large number of aircraft affected by the Pinatubo ash clouds indicates that this information either did not reach appropriate officials or that the pilots, air traffic controllers, and flight dispatchers who received this information were not sufficiently educated about the volcanic ash hazard to know what to do with the information.
Aircraft encountered ash cloud at 29,000 ft at approximately 600 nm west of volcano.
In other cases, pilots may have been unaware that their aircraft had flown through an ash cloud, and damage to the aircraft might not have been noticed until the aircraft was later inspected on the ground.

However, because ABS is designed to keep the wheels from instantaneously locking up, sometimes ABS can make it more difficult to maneuver while offroad.
With ABS, this can sometimes be difficult, because the ABS will inherently try to ramp your wheelspeed down, instead of locking your wheels up right where they are.
I'll be honest and say that I am more familiar with ABS on aircraft systems instead of automobile systems.

Anti-lock Brake System   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
ABS brakes prevent lock-up of the wheels in hard braking situations where traction is low.
The ABS system works by momentarily releasing brake fluid pressure from the brake caliper just before the wheel locks up.
The use of ABS or the turning off of ABS must not affect normal braking.

The U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray Aircraft Finance Research Team recently initiated coverage of the aircraft asset-backed securities (ABS) sector, publishing the "Aircraft ABS Guide." The report is a comprehensive guide for investors during a time of great uncertainty for the sector.
"Aircraft ABS transactions were structured to handle considerable stress, but no one could have predicted the events that precipitated the downtrodden environment that exists today.
We believe this new environment makes the base case assumptions in aircraft ABS prospectuses obsolete, therefore one needs to reassess the ability of the pool of aircraft to generate enough cash flow to pay off the debt associated with it."

They operate field lighting systems, communicate with aircraft, furnish pilots with information regarding traffic, navigation and weather conditions, as well as operate and adjust ground-controlled approach (GCA) systems and interpret targets on radar screens and plot aircraft positions.
AWs also operate radars to provide information for aircraft and surface navigation and act as helicopter-rescue crewmen, as well as part of the flight crew on long-range and intermediate-range aircraft.

Except for brakes manufactured by ABS (Aircraft Braking System), the temperature indicated in the cockpit when the brake fans are running is significantly lower than the temperature indicated brake fans OFF.
Such charts have not been published for the other aircraft type because there are more margins due to the worn brake certification and the use of reverse thrust.

Aircraft lease rates are already down between 10%-50% from pre-Sept. 11 levels, and Fitch Ratings anticipates that lease rates will fall an additional 15%-20% or more in 2003, according to a new report on aircraft operating lease asset-backed securitizations (ABS) published yesterday by the rating agency.
Aircraft lease ABS transactions with the least liquid aircraft and the most terminations in the next 12-24 months will experience the highest cash flow impairment and, consequently, will be the most likely candidates for a rating downgrade.
'It is hard to imagine a year more difficult for aircraft operating lease asset-backed securities than 2002, but, unfortunately, the worst is not over,' said Donald Powell, senior director, Fitch Ratings.
