ABWR Performance Characteristics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
For added protection, the ABWR has an on-site, dedicated combustion turbine to provide a diverse source of emergency power to any of the three divisions of safety systems.
Because the ABWR has more design margins, the frequency of transients resulting in reactor scram or initiation of a safety system has been greatly reduced.
ABWR come equipped with features to passively mitigate the consequences of a severe accident.

A MANUFACTURER'S VIEW OF THE AFFLUENT SOCIETY AND THE ROLE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY
Success of ABWR was realized through international cooperation and cooperative relations among the three key parties: the manufacturers, the user and the government.
A major improvement in the ABWR, consistent with the trend of BWR improvement, is that it achieves further simplification of the primary recirculation loop by the adoption of Reactor Internal Pumps(RIP).
Next ABWR will build on the favorable records established by the first units and is expected to start operation in the first half of 2000.

One way for this assurance to be given would be for ABWR to agree to sign a contract with another corporation agreeing to accept animals that meet a specified set of standards.
This does not mean that ABWR members would have to change their breeding, only that they not object to ABWR maintaining the registry.
The offspring of animals registered in the ABWR Herdbook mated to a Marker Beefalo would be registered in the Marker Beefalo Registry as the same percentage Marker Beefalo as they would have been in the Herdbook if both parents had been registered in the Herdbook.

The cost discussed here is for the first U.S. ABWR and is not contingent upon building four to six units as some kind of a package deal.
The reason, of course, is that because ABWRs have been and continue to be built overseas (Japanese utilities, for example, are presently in the process of building six more ABWRs), the first U.S. ABWR will be the much sought after Nth-of-a-kind unit.
Studies show that it is possible to construct an ABWR in only 30 months from first concrete, a savings of nine months that with a six-month startup would lead to a three-year construction schedule.

Two ABWRs are operating in Japan, and four are under construction, two each in Taiwan and Japan.
While the ABWR design is usually associated in the United States with General Electric, the two units now being built in Japan are products of Toshiba and Hitachi.
General Electric, Toshiba, and Hitachi have shown an interest in building ABWRs in the U.S. There are many variations in ABWR design with the most frequently mentioned capacities in the 1250-1500 MWe range.

The formation of the American Beefalo World Registry has been an evolutionary process as the ABWR is the culmination and unification of work done by individuals in three former Beefalo organizations: The American Beefalo Association, the World Beefalo Association, and the International Beefalo Breeders Registry.
The ABWR is comprised of approximately 850 members, some annual and some lifetime memberships.

The plant's design is based upon the proven ABWR (Advanced Boiling Water Reactor) design with improvements aimed at meeting the high safety standards of Finnish regulators and the customer's requirements.
Moreover, the ABWR design we proposed has new safety features and improvements in the technology areas of digitized control and instrumentation and modern control room.
Steve Hucik, general manager, Nuclear Plant Projects for GE, noted that similar versions of the proposed Finnish ABWR are in operation or under construction in other major industrialized countries.

Improvements in the safety of the ABWR designed by General Electric resulted in significantly more compacted designs: the volume of the ABWR building is approximately one third smaller than those of the present BWR buildings, resulting in less construction time and expenses.
One of two General Electric ABWR in Japan was completed in just over four years, over three months ahead of schedule.
Modern digital technology and fiber optics are used for control and instrumentation in the plant, significantly decreasing the amount of cabling in the plant and time required to build the plant.

The opening of the seventh reactor and the fact that the station reached the status of the þworld's largestþ, was reason for local officials to give more attention to the raising amount of radioactive spent fuel being stored at the complex.
The ABWR was said to be the first advanced boiling water reactor to be operated.

ADVANCED NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY: A PROVEN WAY TO SUSTAIN WORLD DEVELOPMENT INTO THE NEXT MILLENNIUM
For example, the ABWR design employs a network of safety systems that are more redundant and diverse than its predecessors and is designed to dramatically mitigate the consequences of even a "severe accident" of the type that occurred at Three Mile Island.
The ABWR has been scrutinized and licensed by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in what has been described as the most exhausting review ever undertaken by the NRC.
As a result, and because of the project experience in Japan and Taiwan, GE believes an ABWR could be built in the U.S. in four years for $1600/kw (overnight cost) which would make it an attractive option indeed.

First ABWR started operation in Japan, its design is basically traditional BWR technology except for some items: the ten internal recirculation pumps are positioned inside the reactor pressure vessel.
The ABWR has passive severe accident mitigation features to protect the containment from overpressurization: One system floods the lower drywell - this system is passive, initatited by high temperatures.

Features of an ABWR are reactor internal pumps (RIPs) placed in the lower plenum and downcomer, peripherally bottom-mounted on the reactor pressure vessel - which should require different modeling from the jet pumps and two recirculation pumps in the primary outer-loop recirculations of BWR-5.
Efforts focused on modeling and simulating the ABWR with transient analyses by the point-kinetics model with the local reactivity modified by local importance weighting of the squared nodal power during start-up tests using the RETRAN-3D code, version MOD003 without three-dimensional kinetics.
The core and reactor pressure vessel including ten ABWR RIPs and the steam lines were modeled, and simulations were carried out for the cases of the one-pump trip test, the changing-setpoint tests, the main-steam-isolation-valve-closure test, and the generator load rejection test with bypass.

The ESBWR evolved from GE's 1,350-megawatt Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR), which the NRC certified for U.S. construction in 1997.
The ABWR is a design that has already been proven with more than 18 reactor years of operating data from plants completed in Japan in the mid-to-late 1990s.
The ESBWR is considered to be an "evolutionary" design because while it incorporates much of the ABWR's key and proven design features, including its advanced digital monitoring and controls technology and advanced construction techniques, it also incorporates new technology advances.

Future ABWRs are expected to achieve a significant reduction in generation costs relative to the first ABWRs.
In addition, a development programme was started in 1991 for ABWR-II, aiming to further improve and evolve the ABWR, with the goal of significant reduction in power generation cost relative to a standardized ABWR.

The overall conclusion of this cost and schedule study is that two ABWR nuclear units can be constructed at the Bellefonte site on a 40 month schedule for each reactor.
The engineering, procurement and construction cost for the two units is $1611/KW for the 1371MWe certified ABWR plant design that incorporates some technology advancements developed during the Japanese and Lungmen ABWR construction.
This estimate should establish an upper bound for the cost of a new nuclear power plant since the newer passive reactor designs are expected to be simplified and more economical to build.
