AC-47 Spooky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AC-47 Spooky was the first in a series of gunships developed by the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
It was felt that more firepower than could be provided by light and medium attack aircraft was needed in some situations when ground forces called for close support.

 aftimes.htm
Spooky carried only three 7.62mm MXU-47A miniguns with 21,000 rounds of ammunition, but more than once this new type of fighting machine prevented the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese from overrunning friendly outposts.
On Feb. 24, 1969, after an AC-47 called Spooky 71 was hit by anti-aircraft fire, Airman 1st Class John L. Levitow fell upon a burning flare that had gotten loose.
Soon after the first example arrived in Vietnam, it was redesignated AC-47, the 'A' signifying 'attack,' and was nicknamed Spooky.

 AC-47
The day was Feb. 24, 1969 and Levitow was handling Mark 24 magnesium flares aboard "Spooky 71" when his pilot threw the AC-47 and its eight-man crew into a turn to engage Viet Cong whose muzzle flashes were visible outside Long Binh Army Base.
The aircraft, an armed version of the C-47 Skytrain transport, had been flying a night mission in the Tan Son Nhut Air Base area when Long Binh came under attack.
Everyone in the back of Spooky 71 was wounded, including Levitow who was hit by shrapnel that "felt like a two-by-four."

These aircraft were known as 'Puff the Magic Dragon' or 'Spooky' and were deployed in defense of Army outposts under attack.
The AC-47 (a derivitive of the DC-3) was modified from a cargo carrier to a gunship with the addition of three gatling guns each capable of firing up to 6,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition per minute.
Spooky flew only at night in this role and was so successful that it led to other, larger, gunship models being developed.

In 1968, on one of these supposedly routine AC-47 gunship missions, the heroic actions of a young airman earned him the Medal of Honor, making him the only Air Force enlisted man to be so honored during the Vietnam conflict.
On that February night, Spooky 71 had been in the air for four and a half hours flying combat patrol over Tan Son Nhut Air Base, when Maj. Keneth Carpenter, the aircraft commander, was directed to an area south of the Army base where enemy morrtars were laying down a heavy barrage.

 Selfridge 2005 highlights
This AC-47 "Spooky" gunship was one of the Vietnam war era aircraft at the Selfridge show.
The Spooky was a derivative of the DC-3 airliner and the C-47 Dakota world war two transport plane, armed with an awesome amount of firepower in the form of multiple gatling guns and even cannons fired out of the left-hand side of the aircraft as it circled above its target.
However, the 2005 airshow with the theme "salute to the veterans of Vietnam" had such a great collection of aircraft that I not only made the trip from where I was living in California, but I even missed the excellent Chino airshow which happened to be on the same weekend.

 AC-130U Spectre
It wasn't until the Vietnam War that this concept saw service, first with the AC-47 "Spooky" Gunship.
The Spooky could put out a phenomenal amount of bullets and looked like it was firing a solid stream of fire, which was as demoralizing to the Vietnamese as it was effective at routing their attacks through sheer destruction of forces.
The AC-47 was a converted C-47 (or DC-3) cargo plane with three 7.62 gatling guns mounted on the left side.

 GUNSHIPS
Often the AC-130 is thought of as a natural followup to the AC-47 SPOOKY fixed-wing gunships which made their appearance in the skies of South Vietnam in late 1964.
The later models of the gunship, the AC-130E and H, are heralded as the most heavily armed aircraft to ever take to the skies, which is true as long as we are talking about guns and not pure destructive power.
But it was actually the C-130 that gunship developers had in mind when tests with a modified C-131 proved the theory of mounting side-firing guns on a transport.
