RAF - Mauser and Aden Cannon
The Aden cannon is a fully automatic, single-barrelled, five-chambered rotating cylinder gun, which is fitted to the Jaguar GR3 and the Hawk T1A.
The single Aden cannon operated by the Hawk T1A is housed in an external gun-pod assembly bolted to the underside of the fuselage on the centre-line of the aircraft.
The cannon is able to fire ball ammunition or high-explosive-tipped rounds and is used by the Hawk for air-to-air and air-to-ground training and by the Jaguar in the air-to-ground role.

 Historical background
The expression Arabia Felix, or the Happy Arabia, was used already in the ancient world, in the time of the Queen of Sheba (10 centuries BC) which was surrounded by a sense of mystery and the air of unimaginable wealth and luxury.
The modern history of Yemen began with the desire of foreign powers – the Turks in the north and the British in the south – to control the crucial trade routes that passed through the area.
However, in 1946 one of the Imam’s sons joined the rebels in Aden; he became the leading figure of the resistance.

The ADEN (named for the Armament Development Establishment, where it was designed, and Enfield, where it is produced) was developed in the late 1940s as a replacement for the older Hispano-Suiza HS 404 20 mm cannon used in British aircraft of World War II.
It is based (as are the French DEFA and American M39 cannon) on the mechanism of the German Mauser MG 213C, an experimental revolver cannon designed for the Luftwaffe, but never used in combat.
The ADEN is very similar to the French DEFA cannon, and the two weapons use the same range of 30 mm ammunition.

The ADEN entered service on the Hawker Hunter in 1954, and subsequently used on every British gun-armed aircraft until the advent of the Panavia Tornado in the 1980s.
Aircraft using the ADEN 30 as in-built armament have included the English Electric Lightning, Folland Gnat (and HAL Ajeet), Hawker Hunter, Gloster Javelin, Saab Lansen, Saab Draken, Supermarine Scimitar, and Australian versions of the F-86 Sabre.

Developments in armament, notably the introduction of the 20mm cannon by the RAF, generally led to the disappearance of the bomber destroyer from most air forces.
This was due to the introduction of improved high-speed cannons, notably the British Aden[?] and French DEFA[?].
Missiles could do considerably more damage than a cannon, at longer range, were lighter, and kept the fighters out of the range of the defensive guns on the bombers.

The mounting for the cannon pack was reinforced, since early on the Hunter demonstrated some stress and cracking from the cannon recoil, and an air scoop was added in the nose that popped open while the cannon were being fired to flush out any potentially explosive buildup of muzzle gases.
The cannon blast deflectors were not fitted, since they were not seen as necessary for a machine that operated at low altitudes in the ground-attack role.
Their Aden cannon were deleted and the muzzle ports faired over, while the radar ranging gunsight was deleted as well.

With conventional large cannon, the firing rate is limited by the time it takes for the breechblock to be driven rearwards to extract the fired case and then travel forward again to load the next round.
This "revolver" cannon should not be confused with the "rotary" cannon which is similar in operation but has a barrel attached to each cylinder, the whole contraption spinning round as it fires.
Against small and agile targets the Aden's low velocity is a distinct handicap which explains the RAF's choice of a 25 mm version of the Aden, whose 25 x 137 ammunition fires a lighter shell but at a muzzle velocity of 1,100 m/sec and with a 50% higher rate of fire, for the Harrier GR7.

 M39 cannon at AllExperts
The M39 was developed by the Springfield Armory, based on the World War II-era design of the German Mauser MG 213, a 20 mm (and 30 mm) cannon developed for the Luftwaffe, but not used in combat.
The same design inspired the British ADEN cannon and the French DEFA, but American designers chose a smaller 20 mm round to increase the weapon's rate of fire and muzzle velocity at the expense of hitting power.
The M39 is not the same as the Hispano M3 derivatives used by the Navy (as the M3 and the later Colt Mk 12 cannon) on aircraft like the A-4 Skyhawk and F-8 Crusader, nor the Hispano-derived M24 used by some USAF aircraft of the late 1940s.

It had originally been planned to replace the six 0.50-inch machine guns of the F-86 with the standard British armament of four 20-mm cannon, but in August 1952 the decision was made to adopt a pair of 30-mm Aden cannon.
The Aden cannon was a development of the World War 2 Mauser MG213 cannon, and had a rate of fire of 1200 rounds per minute and a 2600 ft/sec muzzle velocity.
The cannon were mounted in the original 0.50-inch machine gun bays, but staggered, and the starboard weapon was mounted inverted and 8 inches forward of the port weapon.
