 [6.0] Decoys
The first operational decoy drone was the McDonnell-Douglas "ADM-20 Quail", which was carried by Boeing B-52 bombers to help them penetrate defended airspace.
The Quail was designed to be boxy in order to give it a radar cross section much like that of its B-52 mother ship, and was also fitted with active radar reflection enhancement devices, as well as chaff and flare dispensers to further confuse enemy defenses.
The Quail remained in first line service through the 1960s, but during a test exercise in 1972, radar operators were able to spot the decoy 21 times out of 23.

The Quail is an air-launched decoy missile carried by the B-52 strategic bomber.
The Quail on display was transferred to the Air Force Museum from Eglin AFB, Florida, in January 1961.
The Quail would be used during an actual bombing attack to confuse an enemy's defensive radar network.

McDonnell made a number of missiles, including the unusual ADM-20 Quail, as well as experimenting with hypersonic flight, research that enabled them to gain a substantial share of the NASA projects Mercury and Gemini.
The company produced a number of aircraft including the C-47 (based on the DC-3), the DB-7 (known as the A-20, Havoc or Boston), the Dauntless and the A-26 Invader.
Both companies were eager to enter the new missile business, Douglas moving from producing air-to-air rockets and missiles to entire missile systems under the 1956 Nike program and becoming the main contractor of the Skybolt ALBM program and the Thor ballistic missile program.

 [1.0] B-52 Evolution
The Quail was a little boxy aircraft that folded up for stowage; it was lowered out of the bombbay on a special rack to unfold its wings and then be released.
The trucks could be steered up to 20 degrees in either direction from the centerline, allowing the bomber to takeoff or land at an angle in a crosswind.
However, it is clear that the Hound Dog and Quail were eventually carried by many of the earlier B-52 variants.

 Missles, Bombs, and Guns
The first missile used extensively on the B-52 was the GAM-72 Quail, later called the ADM-20 for Air Decoy Missile.
The Quail was used to confuse the enemy's defenses by presenting a radar target identical to that of the B-52 from which it was launched.
The Quail was preprogrammed to fly a flight path which simulated the B-52 maneuvers, maintaining the same speeds and altitudes.

 Global Defence Review
The AGM-86 started as the subsonic cruise armed decoy (SCAD) programme to replace the ADM-20 Quail, a sub-scale drone that could mimic the radar cross-section of a B-52 on Soviet radars.
Unlike the unarmed Quail, some SCADs were to be fitted with nuclear warheads, increasing the problems for the Soviet defenders.
The block 1 upgrade reduced the CEP to 20 ft (6m) and fitted a 3,000 lb (1360 kg) HE warhead, in place of the block 0s 2,000 lb (910 kg) item.

 McDonnell ADM-20 Quail
The Quail was a decoy missile launched from a B-52 Stratofortress over hostile territory to confuse enemy defenses.
When released to fly under the power of its own turbojet engine, the Quail appeared on defensive radar screens as another B-52.

AGM-86 ALCM Air-Launched Cruise Missile  - Strategic Air Command - Nuclear Warhead
As such, it was essentially a follow-on to the ADM-20 Quail decoy.
SCAD was to be a decoy missile carried by B-52 and B-1A bombers, which was to simulate the bombers on radar to disrupt enemy air-defense systems.
Early in the concept phase it became clear that SCAD could also be fitted with a small nuclear warhead, and the acronym was accordingly changed to Subsonic Cruise Armed Decoy.

 Buck Duck
The concept of a small bomber-launched decoy missile was eventually brought to fruition with the GAM-72/ADM-20 Quail in the B-52.
However, since other contemporary decoy missiles (GAM-72/ADM-20 Green Quail and SM-73 Bull Goose) used J85/J83 turbojet propulsion, and because source [2] mentions a report that the GAM-71 used in fact a small turbojet engine, it's at least possible (but in no way certain) that "LR85" is an error for "J85".
The program had proceeded with low priority at Convair, and it was probably terminated because at that time the B-36 would not be in service for much longer anyway.

Still Going Strong--the B-52 in its third decade
One of the most significant countermeasures carried for some time was the ADM-20 Quail decoy missile.
The Subsonic Cruise Armed Decoy (SCAD) was to be the replacement for the Quail but with one added dimension: the SCAD was to carry a warhead in addition to its decoy mission.
The jet-powered decoys were to be dropped in an operational environment from the Stratofort’s bomb bays.
