The ADR Editor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
ADR is an acronym for automatic dialogue replacement.
In this process the actors are called back during the post-production process to re-record dialogue that wasn't recorded properly during the shoot.
The editor supervises this process and matches the newly recorded lines to the actor's mouth on film.

Assistants may be permitted by the editor to do some creative work, such as commenting on the editor's work; cutting temporary ("temp") sound effects and music into the track; and sometimes even editing scenes.
ADR is frequently used to replace production track of poor quality (e.g., due to high levels of background noise) or to change the delivery or inflection of a line.
ADR can also be used to insert new lines of dialogue which are conceived during editing, although such lines can only be placed against picture in which the face of the actor speaking is not visible.

 JAMS - The Resolution Experts
My interest in ADR arose because in 1985 -1986 I was counsel to a group of clients who participated in a fairly substantial mediation and arbitration process that took place as part of the Johns Manville bankruptcy proceeding.
As a result of that experience I became very interested in ADR and how valuable it was in resolving that case.
The use of ADR is stronger in New York and New Jersey than in Boston or Washington, but we have only begun to scratch the surface.

 Making movies
ADR is the process of re-recording lines of dialogue in sync to the moving picture and “guide track” before the actor’s eyes and ears, which is then digitally manipulated to match the lips on the screen so perfectly that theatre audiences believe no changes were made to the original production tracks.
ADR was created by the RCA Corporation, which allows an interlocked projector and production guide track to be backed up to the start of the line, and then played forward as many times as needed to get a good take.
ADR is recorded on a sound stage designed for just that purpose, which is acoustically engineered for recording dialogue in sync to picture.

 adr - Microformats
adr is a 1:1 representation of the adr property in the vCard standard (RFC2426 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2426.txt)) in XHTML, one of several open microformat standards.
This specification introduces the adr microformat, which is a 1:1 representation of the aforementioned adr property from the vCard standard, by simply reusing the adr property and sub-properties as-is from the hCard microformat.
The following sites have published adrs, outside their normal context of hCards, and thus are a great place to start for anyone looking for examples "in the wild" to try parsing, indexing, organizing etc., in addition to hCard examples in the wild.

 ADR-Necessary Evil or Saving Grace
ADR, in the end, is as big or small a part of the post-production puzzle as the supervisor and director decide it needs to be.
The ADR stage becomes the place where they can, according to Waddell, add something "just slightly different from the original quality, which can bring points out of a scene that you never knew existed." Because of the degree of technique required to match tone, pitch, emotion and sync, not all actors can do it.
Matt Wood became a supervising sound editor on Star Wars: Episode I. This "battlefield promotion" was based, to a certain extent, on his creation of a semi-mobile ADR studio, with digital picture, beeps, streamers, mix-board routing and Pro Tools sessions to record into, all on his Powerbook G3.

CRInfo: The Conflict Resolution Information Source - Court ADR
Courts and ADR proponents are no longer in the position of "reinventing the wheel," but rather improving it with innovative approaches.
In the end, it was up to the editors to select the resources that we thought were the most well-written, cogent, and applicable to the task at hand.
Court ADR approaches range from mandatory programs operated by courts in which all cases of a particular type are handled by court staff, to a court simply encouraging the private use of alternatives, but instituting no rules, program, budget, tracking, or staff to assist in that use.

Editors Guild Magazine - Tech Tips
Like the Lartec system used in Los Angeles, the VS-Link software is a means of taking an ADR cue list created by an ADR editor and importing it so that ADR mixers do not have to spend his or her time entering in number after number.
The downside (and thanks to the first law of thermodynamics, there is always a downside) is that using the system takes a bit of preparation on the part of the ADR editor.
But not all ADR mixers working with the system are adept at operating the sorting features, so my "overkill" preparation was not in vain.

Once the underscore is recorded, and the source music gathered, the Music Editor will usually be the person who edits or supervises the final synchronization of all music elements prior to the mix.
Although the film editor may have been assembling the "editor's cut" during the shooting period, the first formal edit period is generally referred to as the director's cut, and it is when the first full assembly of the film is refined.
During the mix, the edited production dialogue and ADR, sound effects, Foley and Musical elements that will comprise the soundtrack are assembled in their edited form, and balanced by a number of mixers to become the final soundtrack.
