ADSI - a Whatis.com definition - see also: Analog Display Services Interface   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
ADSI (Analog Display Services Interface) is the standard protocol for enabling alternate voice and data services, such as a visual display at the phone, over the analog telephone network.
Developed by Bellcore in 1993, ADSI is now built into devices such as special telephones with small display screens, cable TV set-top box, personal digital assistants (personal digital assistant), pagers, and personal computers with telephone applications.
If you have an ADSI screen phone, several options are displayed on your screen including switching to the new call, forwarding the new call to your voice mail, putting the new caller on hold, playing a recorded message, or dropping the current call and switching to the new call.

ADSI objects are COM objects, which represent objects in an underlying directory service.
ADSI provides an abstract schema which describes the type of objects and attributes supported by each provider.
ADSI serverless binding is not avalable on Windows NT4 or Windows 98, so on these platforms you must always supply the name of an LDAP server for the connections:

ADSI is a system component of Windows 2000 so no additional installation in required on that operating system.
An external application or COM object that uses ADSI to retrieve the information from the LDAP server and then build a table in SQL by using ADO or other data access methods is another viable method.
ADSI will read schema information from the LDAP server that defines the structure and syntax of the classes and attributes used by the server.

ADSI is a set of open interfaces that abstract the capabilities of directory services from different network providers to present a single view for accessing and managing network resources.
ADSI is different from OLE-DS in two ways: As the API to the Active Directory, it reflects the name change of the Windows NT 5.0 Directory Service to Active Directory; and second, it offers full support for LDAP.
ADSI adds value to LDAP in two ways: it is a higher-level API set than LDAP and it is easier to use than LDAP.

ADSI 2.5 is currently intended for writing applications that will let Windows NT workstation, Windows 9x, and, ultimately, Windows 2000 clients connect to data residing in Active Directory.
Other ADSI 2.5 features include support for Kerberos authentication, sorts that can be performed against Active Directory before data from queries are returned to the client, and clients that can bind automatically to Active Directory and select the server replica most likely to offer the highest quality of service.

If ADSI uses the default version 2 schema, it does not have access to nonstandard schema information, including custom classes or attributes that have been created on the server.

Instead of binding directly with ADSI, in this case, we use ADO to bind with the Active Directory, just so that the retreived data is presented as a record like if the data was retrieved from a relational database.

Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) abstract the capabilities of different directory services from different network vendors to present a single set of directory service interfaces for managing network resources.
ADSI enables administrators to automate common tasks such as adding users and groups, managing printers, and setting permissions on network resources.
ADSI gives developers access to multiple directory service providers through an open set of interfaces.

One more thing: ADSI requires that any object has a unique name: if we assume that all forms had unique names (which they usually will), then I could identify any object (Form) by using its name.
The predefined ADSI objects have very few properties: these may not be enough for a particular provider.
You can begin to perform administrative tasks using ADSI, and identify areas of your applications where it will be better to use ADSI rather than a native Directory provider.
