ADSR envelope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ADSR envelope is a component of many synthesizers, samplers, and other electronic musical instruments.
The envelope may be a discrete circuit or module (in the case of analog devices), or implemented as part of the unit's software (in the case of digital devices).
A synthesizer's ADSR envelope is a way to tailor a "voice" (the technical term is timbre) for the synth, sometimes to help it sound more like a mechanical instrument.

 Envelope Generators
An envelope generator (sometimes, and more justly, called a transient generator) makes an audio signal that smoothly rises and falls as if to control the loudness of a musical note as it rises and falls.
Envelope generators have come in many forms over the years, but the simples and the perennial favorite is the ADSR envelope generator.
The ADSR generator reacts to these situations by canceling whatever remains of the attack and decay segments and continuing straight to the release segment.

The envelope of a wave describes the 'life' of the wave.
Basically, visualizing the envelope of sound is like watching a morphing process taking place as the sound is born, lives and dies.
ADSR will be very important to take into consideration as we study sample rates.

The envelope is the range 0 to 1 and may need to be scaled further.
This means adsr is not suitable for use with MIDI events.
The opcodes xadsr and mxadsr are identical to adsr and madsr, respectively, except they use exponential, rather than linear, line segments.

 ADSR
The Envelope Generator (or ADSR) is classified as a "controller." As can be seen by the diagram below, the ADSR is NOT a module that the audio signal passes through.
Actually there is, but it takes the ADSR from 10volts (at the end of the attack portion) to 10volts at the sustain portion and the result is no different from having an ASR (devoid of the decay portion).
A three position toggle switch which allows the ADSR to be activated from the (a) gate and trigger, (b) gate only or (c) an external source (jack provided for that source).

WaveWarp Component Library-- Signal Generators-- ADSR Envelope
This type of envelope is often used for shaping the amplitude of the output of an oscillator (or wavetable generator) in order to create synthetic musical notes with realistic transient characteristics.
The main difference between this four-stage envelope generator and the other control signal generators in the WaveWarp Component Library is that each stage of the four-stage envelope can have its own time scale which may be completely different from the other stages.
Although ADSR envelopes are typically used for shaping musical notes, this is by no means the only useful application.

 Penfold Book, Chapter 2: EG
Although having the advantage of extreme simplicity, the envelope generator of Figure 11 is not very practical in that it requires two sets of key contacts, and one set is of the, normally closed variety (which can be difficult to arrange with some keyboards).
Although an ADSR envelope shaper is rather more complex than an attack decay type, it does not greatly increase the cost of the synthesiser as a whole, and is probably well worth the additional expense.
The main circuit of the ADSR envelope shaper is shown in Figure 14, and the rest of the circuit appears in Figure 15.

This prevents the ADSR generator from launching its decay segment after launching its release segment.
There are six control inlets: the first to trigger the ADSR generator, and the others to update the values of the five parameters.
Furthermore, the ADSR generator may be reset to zero by sending a negative trigger (which also generates an onset).

ADSR Envelope Generator   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The RS60 Envelope Generator is a flexible EG that generates a four-stage ADSR voltage envelope that varies from 0V to +10V.
The STD (standard) setting is the normal mode of operation for conventional ADSR envelope generation using a Gate pulse to initiate and hold the envelope.
This is particularly useful for key-scaling the envelope to imitate the responses of the many natural sounds and instruments that become shorter in duration as their pitch increases.

Wind Synthesizer -- Up Close   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
This is because the breath envelope from the controller merely follows the blowing force from the player's mouth -- there is no special transient phase corresponding to the buildup of acoustic energy in the wind column of an acoustic instrument.
These triggers fire separate envelope generators, usually denoted as AD1 and AD2, which can be incorporated into the synthesizer patch along with the wind control provided by E. The usefulness of the AD envelopes can be enhanced by modulating their amplitude with the breath envelope.
The resultant initial transient envelope is weak when the player blows gradually into a note, and becomes more pronounced when the note is attacked sharply.

The program may be used to investigate the envelope, via the voice 3 envelope generator output register: select voice 3, and set the ADSR values to, say attack 14, decay 10, sustain 10, and release 8.
Like an analog envelope generator, the SID Envelope Generator would track the Sustain level if it was changed to a lower value during the Sustain portion of the envelope, however, it would not count UP if the Sustain level were set higher.
The 8-bit output of the Envelope Generator was then sent to the Multiplying D/A converter to modulate the amplitude of the selected Oscillator Waveform (to be technically accurate, actually the waveform was modulating the output of the Envelope Generator, but the result is the same).

1: The frequency shifter setup for toms uses an envelope follower to trigger a standard ADSR envelope, which is used to modulate the amount of frequency shift.
The envelope follower applies the most modulation during the loudest part of the input sound, which results in the least shift during the snare-drum attack.

 Envelopes
Of course this is just a very simplified envelope curve, and the envelopes of acoustic sounds are a lot more complex than this one.
To simulate the different envelopes on a synthesizer, we must be able to control the oscillator, the filter and the amplifier in a much more detailed way than just our basic on/off function.
The envelope generator of the oscillator controls how the pitch changes through the duration of the sound, while the envelope generator of the amplifier controls how the volume changes over time.

The envelope generator is the portion of the synth that controls the level of the VCOs output over time.
An envelope generator usually has a knob for each of the 4 functions, although some are a little more limited, and may be simply an AD- or ADR-style with less control possibility.
The VCO is connected to the signal input, while the ADSR is connected to the modulation or control voltage input.

The mixed output of the sources is then passed through the voltage-controlled filter and a voltage-controlled amplifier, each of which has its own ADSR envelope generator.
External pitch control does not pass through the glide circuit, nor is presented to the vcf tracking switches and thus, the external inputs were not designed for external keyboard control.
The envelope generators do not retrigger unless all notes are lifted before the next note is played, an important characteristic which allows phrasing.

 Music 4C Introduction
ADSR envelopes are used to control both the instrument’s amplitude and the Index, with separate controls for the attack, decay, and release times and the sustain values.
Using zero attack and decay times, a SUS value of 1.0, and a release time equal to the duration, the envelope becomes a pure exponential decay, and the sound has the quality of a string, chime, or percussion, depending on the choices of the carrier-to-modulator ratio and the peak Index.
This instrument is exactly the same as the ordinary PM instrument except that the ADSR envelopes have been modified to include exponential changes during the "steady-state" or "sustain" portions of the envelopes.
