VIZ typically releases their manga on a bi-monthly schedule and occasionally chooses titles to be in-store exclusives for chains such as Waldenbooks.
Unfortunately for ADV, the lack of an organized licensing plan and a history of unreliable release dates led to the cancellation or rescheduling of many of their titles.
ADV claimed the market was saturated with titles, and they were ultimately forced to lay off as many as forty people.

 COMICON.com: ADV MANGA RE-STRUCTURES
Unlike other names in the manga market, ADV began their trade publishing division relatively late as an outgrowth of its homegrown success in anime distribution, hiring Susan Itin as its publishing editor in May 2003 and announcing the publishing effort in November of that year.
For ADV, their future in manga depends on overall success in the business on which the company was built starting in 1992, perhaps more so than any competing publisher.
Manga companies generally have a hard time maintaining production discipline due to the allure of top title sales levels and agreements with producers that often involve taking properties in groups in order to get at the most promising one or two titles.
