Review of the Atomic Energy Corporation
The primary mandate of the AEC (and its former subsidiary companies) in the 1970s and 1980s was to develop an indigenous nuclear fuel cycle for powering nuclear power plants and for providing material for nuclear weapons.
The AEC was able to produce high-enriched uranium for nuclear weapons, and low-enriched uranium for fabrication into nuclear fuel, which partially provided for Koeberg’s needs (from 1988 to 1996).
The original plan recognised that the AEC would no longer be regarded as a national strategic institution, would not be funded by the state at the same levels as in the past and would have to be a commercially-minded organisation with diversified products and services.
