Now Sir Ken is faced with a far bigger revolt by members working in the electrical contracting industry, who believe AEEU officials have given too much away in their annual pay negotiations.
A network of well organised AEEU stewards, representing a skilled workforce which now has the whip hand in a tight labour market, has seen off several attempts by contracting employers in recent years to undermine the electricians' position or target union activists.
But Paul Corby, the AEEU national organiser for construction, said the workers were "jumping the gun".

A ballot of the workers at the company's main Greensand Foundry, William Cook's largest Sheffield plant, was organised, seeking their support for action short of a strike in solidarity with the strikers.
The William Cook dispute is the latest in a series of industrial struggles over the past decade or more that have seen workers first locked out then sacked after taking industrial action in response to cutbacks and attacks on their employment rights.
The AEEU was formed in 1992, through a merger between the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU) and the electricians and plumbers Union, the EETPU, which have a long history supplying the most right wing representatives of the trade union bureaucracy.

The AEEU has a "single-member agreement" with Ericsson, meaning that it is officially recognised by the mobile phone giant and is able to discuss a range of issues including pay, health and safely and, at least in principle, matters of company strategy.
Ericsson's good relations with the AEEU are in stark contrast to the policy of rival handset manufacturer Motorola, which does not recognise trade unions in this country.

The actions of AEEU officials throughout the dispute was truly scandalous.
