AEI's purposes are to defend the principles and improve the institutions of American freedom and democratic capitalism--limited government, private enterprise, individual liberty and responsibility, vigilant and effective defense and foreign policies, political accountability, and open debate.
AEI's president is responsible for setting the Institute's research agenda, selecting its research faculty and administrative staff, approving its publications, managing its operations, ensuring the integrity and quality of its work, and representing the Institute to all of its various audiences.
AEI scholars and fellows are required to disclose in their published work any affiliations they may have with organizations with a direct interest in the subject of that work.

The AEI facility, which includes ten engine dynamometer test cells, is uniquely designed to provide a research and development environment in support of a breadth of diesel engine and/or vehicle development programs.
AEI’s test cell configuration is somewhat unique in that it provides a clean laboratory-like environment for the operators and support personnel on the console side of the cells.
AEI currently maintains a variety of dynamometers in house ranging from dry gap, low inertia 500 HP, through medium inertia, 600 HP dynos.
