The walkout was led by Sultan Ahmad Shah himself who explained it as an "expression of Asian solidarity." The entire Asian delegation walked out of the FIFA congress on July 9 in protest over the allocation of four berths in the finals of soccer's premier event in 2002.
The AFC is unhappy that, with two spots in the finals automatically going to the host nations of Japan and South Korea, 43 AFC members will be left to fight for the remaining two berths allocated to the continent by FIFA last December.
The sultan said the walkout in Los Angeles "should not be construed as a boycott of the 2002 World Cup." The AFC plans to discuss the latest developments in the issue, including correspondence between the sultan and Blatter, at an extraordinary congress in Kuala Lumpur on Oct. 10.
