The AFC was created after the league merged with the American Football League (AFL) in early 1970.
The AFC logo, shown to the right, is likely a variation of the old AFL logo as seen here.
Each team plays the other teams in their division twice (home and away) during the regular season in addition to 10 other games/teams assigned to their schedule by the NFL the previous May. Two of these games are assigned on the basis of the team's final record in the previous season.

The AFC East refers to the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference of the National Football League.
When the division was created after the AFL-NFL Merger in 1970, the division also included the Baltimore Colts.
Despite relocating to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1984, the Colts continued to belong to the AFC East until the 2002 re-alignment when they were put into the AFC South.
