And in all this, the band's lead singer, Davey Havok, found time to croon for a little side project with some of the members of Danzig and Samhain, on Son Of Sam's Songs From The Earth.

Lollipop Issue 56 mp3 Compilation CD: AFI
The origins of AFI (A Fire Inside) are humble -- four high school students making noise in a garage in the early 90's, looking for some way to alleviate boredom in a small town between skateboard sessions.
On September 26th, the band released their fifth full-length album, entitled The Art of Drowning, showcasing exactly what it is AFI has evolved into -- a band with a sound unlike any other, a sound where chilling melodies collide alternately with furious aggression and somber melancholy.
While their music is firmly rooted in both punk rock and hardcore, they have effectively blasted away any distinction between the two and can claim an army of fans from both subcultures as well as virtually every other underground or extreme music genre from goth to metal.

Vick was replaced by Geoff Kresge after several months, and the band played a few local gigs and released a split 7" titled Dork with fellow Ukiah natives Loose Change (a band that incidentally included future AFI member Jade Puget).
However, the band reconvened during a holiday break from school to play a one-off reunion show, and audience response was so positive that the bandmembers decided to quit school and concentrate on music full-time.
AFI kept the momentum going on the road nationwide that summer, followed by a string of overseas dates in October.

The origins and history of AFI are as humble as they are passionate, beginning with the meaning and philosophy behind the acronym now known to an ever-growing legion of fans the world over: A Fire Inside.
And it would be later still that the present AFI lineup would coalesce, with the addition of Jade (by then ex-Redemption 87) on the defining and now-classic fourth album, Black Sails In The Sunset, and the subsequent All Hallow's EP.
In the meantime, AFI's live draw increased exponentially, and with good reason: To witness the AFI live experience is to understand both that unique internal chemistry and the undeniable bond between band and audience that has been honed and strengthened through nearly seven years of non-stop worldwide touring.

AFI ("A Fire Inside") is a scathing hardcore punk outfit from Northern California whose music generally evokes a tearing open of flesh and spilling out of viscera.
That said, the band is talented and adventuresome, taking violent hardcore aggression as the foundation and incorporating other moods and styles, thus making their music considerably more interesting than typical monotone hardcore punk expressions of rage and disenfranchisement.
AFI's vision is decidedly bleak, making them a challenge to listen to, but if you're up for it, it's a satisfying cathartic experience.

AFI is a band lucky to own fiercely loyal fans who embrace -- and ultimately expect -- the gradual transformation the band has undergone with each album since 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset.
Take the band's traditional prelude for instance: this time it's infused with stirring strings and an uplifting dance-pop beat that is a far cry from the dark and eerie call-to-arms chants of previous albums.
AFI even comes as close as they probably ever will to sounding like U2 in "The Missing Frame." Somehow, the guys have managed to combine hardcore instincts with dark emo-coated lyrics, synth shimmies, gothic aesthetics, and electronic beats into a sound that still remains wholly AFI.

Still fueled by an increasing "fire inside," AFI continues to stretch the boundaries of Hard-Core, expanding their own resources, while bringing back the traditional elements of A Minor Threat with the fear factor of The Misfits into one unprecedented state of the art display of Punk Rock fury.
Judging from the band's overall sound, it's stayed pretty consistent over time but from the last EP "All Hallows" and to this new one, there's a broader characteristic I hear in the songs-without calling them commercial by comparison, I think there's a definite growth in the music and a broader design to the song structures...

It would be one more year, however, before the present AFI lineup would click with the addition of Jade Puget (ex-Redemption 87) and the release of fourth album Black Sails in the Sunset and the All Hallows EP (both Nitro, 1999).
