The AFI Life Achievement Award was established by the Board of Directors of the American Film Institute on February 26, 1973 to honor a single individual for his or her lifetime contribution to enriching American culture through motion pictures and television.
Director John Ford was the unanimous choice of the Board of Trustees for the first Award as he "clearly stands preeminent in the history of motion pictures." President Richard M. Nixon attended the gala dinner at which Ford was presented the Award on March 31, 1973.
The Board of Trustees later amended the "test of time" requirement to enable the AFI Life Achievement Award to be presented to individuals with shorter careers, such as Tom Hanks, who at age 46, was the youngest recipient ever, and Steven Spielberg, who received the Award at age 49.

As the latest AFI show was repeated umpteen times on the USA channel, no less than three talented giants: the brilliant director John Frankenheimer, Oscar nom1nee Katy Jurado, who co-starred in "High Noon" opposite Gary Cooper and Oscar winner Rod Steiger, who co-starred in Bogey's swan song.

In recent years the AFI has seen fit to award a few people I’ve honestly felt were not truly worthy of the honour.
If Tom Hanks were the oldest successful actor in the world still living then an argument might be made for his receiving the AFI award, but the fact is there are a lot of artists out there who are for more deserving.
Remember, the AFI missed their opportunity to honour the great Robert Mitchum, a performer who almost single-handedly defined film noir (or at least cemented it into our consciousness).
