Everything you always wanted to know about AIDS misconceptions and conspiracy theories
Because the worldwide spread of AIDS has had such a tragic effect on millions of people world wide, a number of misconceptions and conspiracy theories have appeared as a way of people to lay blame on someone else for the problem.
Conspiracy Theories A number of conspiracy theorists have suggested that AIDS is actually a man-made disease.
These theories usually state that the disease was meant to deliberately wipe out a certain segment of the population in an act of genocide.

AIDS conspiracy theories - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These theories generally state that the disease was designed to deliberately wipe out a certain segment of the population in an act of genocide and/or was created as biowarfare research.
The AIDS conspiracy alleged against her is that the medical establishment seeks to suppress her theories and cures, now offered in Tijuana, Mexico.
Conspiracy theorists of this persuasion sometimes attempt to bolster their cases for one conspiracy theory by appeals to the existence of other conspiracies, such as chemtrail theory.

 AIDS Conpiracy?
Moreover, these conspiracy theories divert energy from the work that must be done in the trenches if marginalized communities are to survive this epidemic: grassroots education and mobilizations for AIDS prevention, and better care for people living with HIV.
Various theories of AIDS origins include: a virus that jumped species, an accidental byproduct of biological warfare experiments on animals, a new viral mutation, and a virus that lived in an isolated ecological niche until new social conditions facilitated the explosion of an epidemic.
Readers not interested in a detailed critique of the conspiracy theories are invited to skip right to the last three sections of this essay, starting with "The Real Genocide." Hopefully, that is also where all readers will concentrate their attention.

This molecular mimicry or "hit-and-run" theory argues that HIV infection sets certain events into motion which may subsequently be able to proceed in the absence of the virus.
AIDS cases in hemophiliacs, transfusion recipients, and the anomalous cases where no risk factors are present account for approximately 5% of the total.
AIDS in these latter three groups can be explained as being old diseases under a new name (AIDS), for instance, the diseases that hemophiliacs get from transfusions and/or from complications of hemophilia itself, and the underlying diseases that necessitate a transfusion.

Pseudoscience - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Popper was advocating that in addition to the expectation for a hypothesis or theory to be empirically verifiable, scientific propositions should be limited to statements that are presented in such a way that in the event they are false, they should be capable of being clearly shown to be false through further experimental testing.
The latter proposed that a scientific theory must "account for all the phenomena that its rival background theory explains" and "must clash empirically with its rival by yielding test implications that are inconsistent with the rival theory".
A number of presently accepted scientific theories were once rejected by mainstream scientists and mathematicians of their time as being pseudoscientific, irrational or obviously false.

 Kids.Net.Au - Encyclopedia > Patient Zero
A misconception holds that he was the first person to introduce HIV into North America.
He is referred to a 'Patient Zero' not because he was the first to be diagnosed with the disease but rather because at least 40 of the 248 people diagnosed with AIDS by April 1982 had either had sex with him or with someone who had.
Now that the incubation time of HIV is known to be longer, it is highly unlikely that any of Patient Zero's sexual partners studied were initially infected by him.

Conspiracy theories on the origin of HIV may be prevalent across race and ethnic lines.
Studies examining the prevalence of conspiracy theories regarding the origins of HIV have focused on populations that are perceived by the investigators to harbor such beliefs and, generally, do not include racially/ethnically diverse samples.
Clinicians also need to be aware of the pervasiveness of such conspiracy theories and, using the trust they cultivate with their patients, serve as a source of sound information to help minimize the role of skepticism in thwarting prevention and treatment benefits.

Conspiracy Culture: From Kennedy to the X-Files by Peter Knight | PopMatters Book Review
Knight wants to play devil's advocate to the claim that conspiracy theories are essentially flawed (at best), or politically destabilizing and dangerous (at worst), and elevate the term "conspiracy" from its pejorative connotation to a form of constructive insight into the perils and uncertainties of contemporary life.
One major frustration of the book is that Knight never provides a definition of what a conspiracy is. According to Webster's dictionary, a conspiracy is either a plan to harm or destroy another person or group, or the group of people who are behind this harmful, destructive plan.
The central image is that of a vast and sinister conspiracy, a gigantic and yet subtle machinery of influence set in motion to undermine and destroy a way of life.

Out of Control, AIDS and the Corruption of Medical Science - by Celia Farber   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Farber's article is that medical professionals, government officials and AIDS activists have united in a global conspiracy to enrich themselves at the expense of the public, by acting as the poodles of the pharmaceutical industry in promoting drugs that don't work for a disease that doesn't exist.
AIDS researchers and activists are united by one theme: the desire to prevent HIV from spreading further and to treat those who are already infected by this lethal virus.
AIDS has been an easy target because the causative virus kills a cell in the body that is vital to protection against common infections.

New AIDS Review Wicked Wikipedia bias in AIDS entries is a known problem hard to solve   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
AIDS is an acronym for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is defined as a collection of symptoms and infections resulting from the depletion of the immune system caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, commonly called HIV (Marx et al., 1982).
The AIDS reappraisal page referenced is also an unusually balanced and informative source on the main points made by the dissidents, but unfortunately many questions are dismissed in a conclusive manner rather than left open.
Though, considering this article (and the AIDS article), it seems to me such a bias might be needed in order to counterbalance the existing treatment of this as a "conspiracy theory" of sorts.

Darwin himself notoriously wrote that revealing his theory of evolution would be like "confessing a murder." Indeed, he had no stomach for it, and waited twelve years to announce evolution, and only did it then because he was pushed into it by fear of losing credit for it.
That AIDS is an infectious disease, and that HIV is the infectious agent, was announced by Joseph Gallo at a CDC news conference.
Although the steady state theory was ultimately rejected, challenges that it raised prompted defenders of the big bang theory to amass theoretical and empirical evidence that further confirmed that theory.
