American Institute of Electrical Engineers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first technical meeting of the AIEE was held during the 1884 International Electrical Exhibition, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (October 7-8, at the Franklin Institute).
The AIEE regional structure was soon complemented by a technical structure – the first technical committee of AIEE (the High Voltage Transmission Committee) was formed in 1903.
The formation of the AIEE Subcommittee on Large-Scale Computing in 1946 is considered a key milestone in the history of computer engineering.

 Short History of the IEEE
On 13 May 1884, the AIEE was born in New York and quickly gained recognition as a representative for American electrical engineers.
During its first three decades, the AIEE confronted and resolved such internal concerns as locating permanent headquarters for the organization providing mechanisms for contact with a far-flung membership and with students, and fostering new technical interests through committees that were established to meet the challenge of increasing specialization.
Many of the original members of the IRE were members of the AIEE and both organizations continued to have members in common until they merged to form the IEEE in 1963.

Institute of Radio Engineers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Moreover, the founders of the IRE sought to establish an international organization (unlike the “American” AIEE), and adopted a tradition of electing some of the IRE's officers from outside the United States.
In the first half of the 20th century, radio communications has experienced great expansion, and the growing professional community of developers and operators of radio systems required standardization, research, and authoritative dissemination of new results among practitioners and researchers.
Until the early 1940s IRE was a relatively small engineering organization, but the growing importance of electrical communications and the emergence of the discipline of electronics in the 1940s have increased its appeal to practitioners.

In January 1961 the IRE past president was invited to attend an AIEE board meeting where he described the organization and philosophy of the institute.
Donald J. Fink, a Fellow of both the AIEE and IRE, was chosen as general manager of the new Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
The merger resulted in the demise of two publications, the AIEE Electrical Engineer and the IRE Proceedings of the IRE, and the birth of the IEEE Spectrum as the new "core" publication with Proceedings remaining as a high quality technical journal available by separate subscription.

The AIEE (American Institute of Electrical Engineers) electrical engineers were in the fields of wired communications, electric lighting, and central power production and distribution, while the IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers) engineers were in the wireless telegraphy and radio broadcasting.
The AIEE became oriented to the electric utilities, and the IRE became the electronic society.
The leadership of the AIEE became alarmed and appointed a task force headed by W. Lewis, who was also a member of the IRE, to devise a plan for dealing with the situation.

IEEE Communications Society - Chapters Manual
The "roots" of the IEEE Communications Society extend back to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) which was founded in 1884, and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) which was formed in 1912.
On July 1, 1964, 18 months after IEEE was formed, the AIEE Communications Division and the IRE PGCS merged to form the IEEE Group on Communication Technology (ComTech) with 4400 members.
Seven former AIEE Technical Committees continued operations under the new Group, with former IRE members joining the TCs that focused on their particular interests.

Both the emblems of IRE and AIEE had as a central motif the association of electricity and magnetism, perhaps the most fundamental concept lending itself to graphical representation.
For good measure, Ohm's law and the letters AIEE were imprinted in gold on the enamel base supporting this remarkable condensation of the history of electrical science.
In 1897, AIEE adopted the emblem which served essentially unchanged until the merger of 1963.

In that year, the AIEE revised its membership structure and established the grade of Fellow for those engineers who had demonstrated outstanding proficiency and had achieved distinction in their profession.
In 1938, the AIEE modified its constitution to provide that 'Applications to the grade of Fellow shall result only from a proposal of five Members or Fellows.' In 1951, the AIEE prohibited applications for Fellow grade altogether, and adopted a policy of direct invitation similar to that of the IRE.
The AIEE followed suit in 1952, and the IEEE continued the practice after the merger.
