Topic: AIM 132 ASRAAM

  AIM-132 ASRAAM
ASRAAM was initiated in the 1980's by Germany and the United Kingdom, but the two countries were unable to agree on the details of the joint-venture.
Germany left the ASRAAM project in the early 1990s, and in the spring of 1995 initiated an improved version of the Sidewinder, the IRIS-T (Infra Red Imagery Sidewinder-Tail controlled) built by Bodensee Geraetetechnik GmBH (BGT).
The resulting assessment was that the ASRAAM (as is) could not meet the AIM-9X operational requirements in high off-boresight angle performance, infrared counter-countermeasures robustness, lethality, and interoperability.

Germany left the ASRAAM project in the early 1990s, and in the spring of 1995 initiated an improved version of the Sidewinder, the IRIS-T.
The ASRAAM also has a LOAL (Lock-On After Launch) ability which is a distinct advantage when the missile is carried in an internal weapons bay such as in the upcoming F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which uses internal weapon bays for stealth.
In 1995, Hughes and BAe proposed the "P3I ASRAAM" after the AIM-132 ASRAAM's performance was evaluated insufficient.

Matra-BAe AIM-132 ASRAAM ASRAAM - The RAAF's New WVR AAM
Since the ASRAAM achieves high accuracy, it is in effect a "hittile" and therefore arguably the warhead serves the purpose of guaranteeing the otherwise almost certain kill produced by a hit with a high velocity missile airframe.
The ASRAAM is designed to enable the early engagement of opposing fighter aircraft, and this is reflected in the missile's combination of highly sensitive FPA seeker, midcourse inertial package and high energy motor.
Therefore the ASRAAM is built to enable a defending fighter to break up opposing fighter escorts in the premerge, to provide the defending fighter with an early opportunity to engage the escorted bomber package.

MBDA (BAe Dynamics/Matra) AIM-132 ASRAAM - Defence Talk - Defence Forum
While the RAF had still rejected full-scale procurement of ASRAAM in 2001 because it was not meeting performance goals in some key areas, these problems have apparently been solved, and ASRAAM was finally declared ready for operational use with the RAF in September 2002.
ASRAAM will be the primary air combat missile for the RAFs Tornado F3 and, subsequently, the Typhoon combat aircraft.
Alan Sparkes, MBDA ASRAAM Project Head said: The results of the ASRAAM trials program and recent aircrew training demonstrate the revolutionary design and aerial combat superiority of ASRAAM, which was sought for the RAF from the outset.

A rival to the American-built AIM-9X Sidewinder, ASRAAM is equipped with a Raytheon-Hughes infrared seeker which is the baseline for the company's AIM-9X Sidewinder seeker.
The Luftwaffe concluded that the AA-11's performance had been seriously underestimated -- the AA-11 turned out to be superior to the Sidewinder AIM-9L in all respects: homing head field of view, acquisition range, maneuverability, ease of designation, and target lock-on.

ASRAAM's are already standard fit on Eurofighter Typhoon, the aussie F-18's and the Tornado F3.
Side doors for a bunch of JSF's would be a cool idea but they would have to be really small (just for ASRAAM's and maybe ASMT) or the profile of the aircraft may have to change.
Bear in mind with this mod the planes could carry 4x AMRAAM and 2x ASRAAM, and considering the RN will use the plane as an air superiority aircraft for fleet defence (as well as a strike plane) something tells me they would love this upgrade.

Dirty Little Secrets  History of AIM-9X StrategyPage.com
The initial ASRAAM development had entered the program definition phase in 1984, but by 1987 there was discord between the two partners over key requirements issues.
With no “ASRAAM” program underway at that point, the US (as well as Canada, Norway and Australia) then considered the MOU abrogated (as there was nothing to pull out of at that time) and began looking for other solutions.
When ASRAAM came to screeching halt, USN and USAF were still not cooperating and began separate programs; USN began developing AIM-9R (a China Lake design along with the BOA airframe improvement effort) while USAF had several seeker and airframe mod efforts going as well (AIM-9M+/Boxoffice).

This feature, called "fire and forget," frees the pilot from the need to continuously illuminate the missile's target with a radar lock, enabling the pilot to aim and fire several missiles simultaneously at multiple targets and perform evasive maneuvers while the missiles guide themselves to the targets.
The AIM-120 grew out of an agreement, no longer in effect, among the United States and several other NATO nations to develop air-to-air missiles and to share production technology.
Under this agreement the U.S. was to develop the next generation medium range missile (AMRAAM) and Europe would develop the next generation short range missile (ASRAAM).

ASRAAM was eventually adopted by the RAF and Germans.
However, the AIM-9R, which featured a much more accurate imaging infra-red (IIR) seeker, and a range of 19 kilometers, was cancelled.

Since the 1980s, the DOD has been searching for a new missile to replace the AIM-9 as its standard short-range "dogfight" air-to-air missile.
Original plans to procure the European AIM-132 ASRAAM (Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile) were dropped, and various test programs were conducted during the late 1980s/early 1990s, including Have Thrust (USAF, classified), Top Hat (USAF/Hughes), Box Office (Loral/Raytheon) and Boa (NWC China Lake).
From 1991 on, efforts to develop a Sidewinder follow-on were generally known as "AIM-9X".
