AIM-120 AMRAAM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, or AMRAAM (pronounced am-ram), commonly known to air crews as the "Slammer," is a modern air-to-air missile (AAM).
AMRAAM serves as a follow-on to the AIM-7 Sparrow missile series.
AMRAAM was developed as the result of an agreement, no longer in effect, among the United States and several other NATO nations to develop air-to-air missiles and to share production technology.

 Equipment Matchups: Air-to-Air Weaponry
The AMRAAM is combat-proven in terms of leathality and reliability.
In late '99 software updates for the ROCAF F-16 Block 20 MLU were initiated, providing the necessary interface to fire the AMRAAM, which paved the way for eventual transfer of the weapon, but also limited the F-16 as the only type capable of carrying the missile.
The Mica has proven to be such a competitive threat to the US AMRAAM missile, a US Navy Los Angeles class submarine may have attempted to gather performance data on a live-fire test conducted near Taiwan in 5/98 when it was detected by an ROCAF S-2T.

 Air Power Analysis: AIM-120 AMRAAM
In addition to this mode, the AMRAAM is fully capable of directing itself to a point in space from which it will engage its radar to seek out the target.
Although the AMRAAM's active radar-homing seeker does feature this capability, its ability to guide itself in this manner is limited by the distance between itself and the target.
In addition, the AMRAAM also allows the pilot to direct simultaneous attacks against multiple targets.

AIM 7 shoot queue is different from AIM 120 shoot queue.
There are three types of missiles in the inventory; AIM 9 Sidewinder is used for short range, AIM 7 Sparrow and AIM 120 AMRAM are used for medium range.
Since AIM 7 is not default for this training program you need to load it.

Raytheon Company: Products & Services: AMRAAM
AMRAAM provides operational flexibility and multi-shot capability.  It can be launched day or night, in all weather.  Its autonomous guidance capability provides the pilot with critical range preserving launch and leave aptitude.
AMRAAM packs unprecedented performance into a lightweight, cost-effective package.  Because of the incorporation of the latest digital technology, micro-miniaturized solid-state electronics, and up to date active radar guidance, AMRAAM delivers the highest dependability at the lowest cost of ownership.
AMRAAM’s operational capabilities include quick fly-out, robust immunity to countermeasures, and better capability attacking low-altitude targets.

 AMRAAM
The AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) is a fire-and-forget air-to-air missile, and has replaced the AIM-7 Sparrow as the U.S. military's standard BVR (Beyond Visual Range) intercept missile.
Although a few AIM-120As were deployed to the Gulf during Operation Desert Storm in early 1991, no AMRAAMs were fired in that conflict (officially, at least).
The AMRAAM can be carried by all current U.S. fighter aircraft (F-14D, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, F-22), and is launched from LAU-127/A, -128/A or -129/A CRLs (Common Rail Launchers), which can also be used for the AIM-9 Sidewinder.

AIM-132 ASRAAM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 1980s, NATO countries had an agreement that the United States would develop a medium-range air-to-air missile (the AIM-120 AMRAAM) to replace the AIM-7 Sparrow, and Britain and Germany would develop a short-range air-to-air missile (the ASRAAM) to replace the AIM-9 Sidewinder.
After numerous development delays with ASRAAM, the U.S. later changed its mind and developed an improved Sidewinder, the AIM-9X.

 PR&F News:
The AIM-120 AMRAAM is an all-weather, beyond-visual-range (BVR) capable missile originally developed as a result of a joint agreement among the United States and its major allies.
A replacement for the AIM-7 Sparrow missile series, the AMRAAM missile is smaller, lighter and quicker, but has longer range and an increase in cost of about 25 percent.
The AMRAAM Captive Equipment (ACE) and Integration Test Vehicle (ITV) pods were flown on the F/A-18s to test the missile's interface with the aircraft and missile guidance algorithms.

 Air Power Analysis: AIM-120 AMRAAM
For example, prior to AMRAAM, an F-15E carrying bombs on its Conformal Fuel Tanks (CFTs) would be incapable of employing a BVR missile for defense as the AIM-7 could only be mounted to the CFT stations.
While the AIM-7 is only able to be cold-launched, the AMRAAM is capable of cold-launch or rail-launch.
This offers a great deal of flexibility to ordinance planners as the AMRAAM can be mounted to stations previously available only to the rail-launched AIM-9 Sidewinder.

The UK armed forces acquired some 330 AIM-120 AMRAAMs to equip the Sea Harrier FA.Mk 2 (with which the missile entered service in 1996) and the Tornado F.Mk 3, which was modified to accept the new weapon, under a CSP (Capability Sustainment Programme) upgrade.
AMRAAM falls short of being a true ‘fire-and-forget’ or ‘launch-and-leave’ weapon (except in the shortest-range engagements).
At best, the AMRAAM will be left further from the target, with more manoeuvring to do to reach it, and this will inevitably impact on ‘endgame performance’.
