Airship Navigator   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
When the R101 airship crashed into a hillside near Beauvais, France in October 1930, not only did the ensuing conflagration bring to an end the dreams of an Imperial airship service, it also extinguished some of the most brilliant lights in the British aviation community at that time.
The Airship Navigator is about the author's father, Ernest L. Johnston OBE AFC, who became an airship pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service in 1916 and lost his life in the R101.
Airship Navigator tells the fascinating story of the mainstream of British airships from the point of one man who flew them between 1916 and 1930.

 Airship Summary
Airships were among the first aircraft to fly, with various designs flying throughout the 19th century.
Several airships of this kind were built in the USA and Britain in the 1920s and 1930s, mostly imitating original Zeppelin design derived from crashed or captured German World War I airships.
While Germany determined that airships were obsolete for military purposes in the coming war and concentrated on the development of airplanes, the United States pursued a program of military airship construction even though it had not developed a clear military doctrine for airship use.

Trenches on the Web - Special: Dirigibles, Airships, Zeppelins and Blimps
The fundamental difference between the airship and the balloon is that the former is powered and horizontally controllable and the latter is neither.
The rigid airship, employed so extensively by Germany during the Great War, was perfected soon after the turn of the century by a former Wurttenberg army cavalry officer, Ferdinand Adolf August Heinrich Graf von Zeppelin, who had been inspired by a balloon ascent he had made in the United States on 19-Aug-1863.
Modern airships serve a number of utilitarian functions, but they remain relative oddities in the sky and are generally known only as flying billboards and for flashing advertising messages and transmitting television images of sporting events.
