 Windows vs. Linux Security
In the Windows world, secrecy (aka security through obscurity) is used to try to minimize attacks but this has the unfortunate effect of exposing a large population of users to attack when the secret can't be kept.
Security issues in sendmail, for example, caused admins to adopt alternatives like qmail, Postfix, and Exim, which have a better security architecture.
From the programmer who builds security into her application to the system admin who uses every tool in his bag of impressive security tricks, Linux and UNIX-based systems are inherently more secure than their Windows counterparts because we demand them to be more secure.

 GrismarNetWiki: Security Status
The security level of a solar system reflects both how safe it is and which rules govern player actions while they are in that system.
Every 15 minutes, your security status is raised, depending on the bounty of the pirate you killed and the security level of the system you killed it in.
At a security status of 5.0 or higher, the number of qualifying targets that may raise your security status becomes very small: while you may get the occasional gain from destroying an NPC battleship, you will more likely only see gains from killing higher level NPC officers and commanders.

Complete Network Security On Demand; No Assembly Required: Managed Security Services — “Security in the Cloud”
Traditional security approaches that require IT managers to research, justify, acquire, install and maintain multiple security technologies are quickly going the way of the dinosaur and being replaced with utility based security also known as Security In The Cloud.
As we are all too aware, security threats are growing at an exponential rate as are the number of security technologies designed to address these new threats.
As such, clients' benefit from an adaptive security platform that is continuously adding new features and services as well as the convenience of easy access to new security technologies as new threats emerge -- aka "Security on Demand".

 NWC | Review | Security | Proxies Add a Protective Shield | | March 5, 2003
Web security proxies, generically referred to as Web application firewalls, sit in front of your Web servers, inspecting and validating all traffic that passes through, aiming to catch attacks before they reach your Web server or applications.
Deciding which security proxy to deploy depends largely on the Web applications you're protecting; in fact, to gain the highest level of security, you should design your Web sites and applications in concert with the nuances of your selected security proxy.
You may be able to get a security proxy to pass the arbitrary data, but don't expect the proxy to secure it let alone understand it.

I’m already working on he post explaining Security 2.0 and the new names we are considering; too many people have spent good time working on a new framework to help improve the way we practice and advance information security.
Santarcangelo’s concept of Security 2.0 for the community stems from the now popular Web 2.0 movement, which is largely aimed at ushering power back to the users and allowing them to have more meaningful interactions.
So as I sit here researching my notions of the future of security (which I will share with you in the coming months), I wanted to share this posting (from the Church of the Customer blog) that I came across this evening.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the security implications and I realize the vulnerability has been proven (instead of merely theoretically possible according to code analysis), but all of security is a trade off between risk and usability.
There are a number of things in the security community that benefit from informal sharing of information and spreading best practices among interested parties.

SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY: THE MEDICAL EXAM OR C.E.
Consultative Examinations are medical examinations that social security disability and ssi claimants are sometimes sent to in the course of processing a claim for disability benefits.
In such cases, the scheduling of a consultative examination may simply be a technical necessity (examiners are required to obtain "recent" medical evidence on which to base their decisions) prior to closing a case.
Claimants who receive appointment letters for social security medical examinations, though, should not be overly concerned about having to go to an exam since the reason for scheduling an exam may never be known.

I can't imagine many new users, installing Mandrake [linux] for the first time (and hearing how secure linux is out of the box) would be aware that it's even a problem, much less know how to fix it.
One problem seems to be the communication of the security settings to a user/admin.

If you put the creator-owner SID in an ACL, it has no effect on the access check for that object, but when the ACL is inherited by a new object, the creator-owner ACE is replaced with the owner SID of the user who created the new object.
We couldn’t use NT security groups for roles, because of the requirement that roles be expanded on a per-object basis – you couldn’t define a separate security group for each message in a folder, for example, since that wouldn’t scale (or be manageable).
To the NT security infrastructure, a resource manager is a component that is using NT security to protect some asset.
