 Psychedelic Pioneers
In a similar fashion the psychedelic evidence challenged the entrenched world view of the psychiatric establishment, and proponents of LSD therapy were summarily denounced and ridiculed by those who were fixated on the model psychosis concept.
Whereas most psychedelic therapists were prepared to assist their patients should difficulties arise, Dr. Salvador Roquet, a maverick Mexican psychiatrist, consciously sought to induce a bummer as part of his "treatment." Roquet utilized various hallucinogenic drugs, including LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, datura, and ketamine.
Their affinity for psychedelics reflected as much a desire to escape from a world they found unbearable as to tap the hidden realms of the psyche.

Alfred Matthew Hubbard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although he had no medical training, during the 1950s Hubbard worked at the Hollywood Hospital with Ross McLean, with psychiatrists Abram Hoffer and Dr. Humphry Osmond, with Myron Stolaroff at the International Federation for Advanced Study in Menlo Park, and with Willis Harman at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) running psychedelic sessions with LSD.
Hubbard is reputed to have introduced more than 6,000 people to LSD, including scientists, politicians, intelligence officials, diplomats, and church figures.
The controversial "Captain" Al Hubbard is considered by some to be as important to the history of LSD as

 Psychedelic Pioneers
Psychedelic therapy, developed by Captain Al Hubbard and popularized by Dr. Humphry Osmond, was geared toward achieving a mystical or conversion experience.
"Al Hubbard was a very strange man," confided a fellow drug researcher, "but he probably knew more about LSD than anyone else in the world." And while his tale has many gaps and fuzzy edges, this much can be established beyond a shadow of a doubt: his enthusiasm for LSD never waned.
That Hubbard, of all people, should have emerged as the first genuine LSD apostle is all the more curious in light of his long-standing affiliation with the cloak-and-dagger trade.

The Dallas Observer just profiled Ellis and retold the psychedelic sports tale of the century:
Thirty-five years ago, on June 12, 1970, Pittsburgh Pirate and future Texas Rangers pitcher Dock Ellis found himself in the Los Angeles home of a childhood friend named Al Rambo.
Dock Ellis was a player for the Pittsburgh Pirates who in 1970 pitched a no-hitter while tripping balls on LSD.

Islam and Scientific Fundamentalism: Progress of Faith, Retreat of Reason?
In the words of one of the celebrated contemporary Muslim scholars, Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, this proposition carries a ring of certainty: "Belief has cognitive content; and one of the main points of divergence between true religion and secular philosophy and science is the way in which the sources and methods of knowledge are understood."
In its conceptual allegiance to Western science and technology it is no different from that of Muhammad Abdus Salam: It takes the value neutrality of knowledge as a monolith and spins an aura of Islamic terms and ideas around the corpus of substantive knowledge.
A variation on the same theme but purportedly salvaging the Muslim intellect from suffocating in the secularist void is the so-called Islamization of Knowledge.

 OccultForums.com - Ralph Metzner, Ph.D. - "Hallucinogenic Drugs & Plants in Psychotherapy & Shamanism"
Leary was also responsible for introducing and popularizing what became known as the "set and setting hypothesis", according to which the primary determinants of a psychedelic experience are the internal set (intention, expectation, motivation) and the external setting or context, including the presence of a guide or therapist (Leary et al.
Apart from the prison project, Leary's work focussed not so much on treatment or therapy, but rather on exploring the possibilities and values of the psychedelic experience for "normals" (mostly graduate students) as well as artists, musicians, poets and writers, when provided in a relatively unstructured but supportive, home-like setting.
This work resulted in adaptations of the Tibetan Buddhist Bardo Thödol and the Chinese Taoist Tao Te Ching as guidebooks for psychedelic experience (Leary, Metzner and Alpert, 1964; Leary, 1997).

The Institute of Psychedelic Research of San Francisco State College employed mescaline in an attempt to facilitate the creative process (Fadiman et al., 1965; Harman et al., 1966).
Only five major research projects in the area of psychedelic drugs and creative performance have been reported and most of these have been described by the experimenters as "pilot studies" rather than full-scale experiments with conclusive results.
L.M. Berlin et al., (1955) investigated the effects of mescaline and LSD upon four graphic artists of national prominence.

This album is not what many expect, it is not overly experimental, not droning or psychedelic but it simultaneously brings the older mystical folk of Donovan into the current and points a new individualistic way forward for the artist.
Listening to the music on this album it is untypical of the experimental often psychedelic music we seek out.
His albums are folk based in structure and the foundation of instrumentation but like early Al Stewart or Donovan are then merged with orchestral and pop music instrumentation in a mixture of chamber music and psychedelia that was only ever made back in that era.
