Mass Measurement of the W-boson using the ALEPH Detector at LEP
Uncertainties due to the detector are determined using data taken at the Z at intervals during the high energy running.
Particles not seen by the detector cause discrepancies in the jet finding, the effect is estimated by matching jets built from Monte Carlo tracks before and after passing them through the detector simulation.

 Detectors
Huge detectors larger than your house surround the particles collision point. These measure and identify the particles produced by colliding the electrons and positrons.
Detectors are comprised of many sections, each measuring different properties of the particles being accelerated through it's structure. The minute electrical disturbances created by the particles breaking up atoms as they collide with them in their headlong rush, are converted into signals and recorded.
The central section, the vertex detector, as small as a can of beans, collects information on the position of the tracks.

ALEPH abstracts submitted to ISMD 2000: ======================================= Topic gammagamma ---------------- Title: Dstar The inclusive production of D*+ mesons has been measured using the ALEPH detector at the LEP storage ring for center-of-mass energies in the range 183-189 GeV.
The analysis is based on 4 million hadronic Z decays recorded by the ALEPH detector between 1991 and 1995.
Title: b mass The three-jet rate as well as moments of event shape variables are measured in hadronic Z decays from data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1, and the ratio of the results found in b-tagged events and in the inclusive sample is computed.

CERN Courier - ALEPH experiments go cosmic - IOP Publishing - article
ALEPH provides high resolution tracking in its central Time Projection Chamber (TPC) in a solenoidal magnetic field and the large hadron calorimeter surrounding the TPC provides further information about cosmic muons.
After analysing cosmic muon events captured by ALEPH in parallel with LEP data-taking and during a special one-week cosmic run, five events were found with the highest muon density ever seen.
The same approach is being followed at the H1 and ZEUS detectors at the HERA collider at DESY in Hamburg, which are approximately 2 km apart.

 Experimental Elementary-Particle Physics
Current projects include the world's largest neutrino detector, a long base line neutrino experiment with a neutrino source from the KEK proton accelerator (the K2K experiment), a satellite born gamma ray observatory, and the use of balloon-borne detectors to extend direct observations of the primary cosmic ray spectrum to the highest accessible energy range.
The experiment is very large imaging Cherenkov detector comprised of a stainless-steel tank, 40 meters across and 40 meters tall, containing 50,000 tons of ultra-purified water and instrumented with 14,000 photomultiplier tubes, located 1000 meters underground near Kamioka, Japan.
Most ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors are ground based and have to infer spectra from observations of particle cascades induced in the atmosphere by cosmic ray interactions at high altitudes.

Litke's present research is on the ALEPH experiment at the LEP electron-positron collider, located at the CERN laboratory in Geneva.
One goal of this experiment is to study the properties of the Z0, one of the gauge bosons responsible for the weak force.
By exploiting the capabilities of the vertex detector Gary was able to observe a few golden events attributed to the presence of a meson containing a b quark and a strange anti-quark, the BsubS.

 ALEPH Supersymmetry Studies at Sheffield
Other groups within ALEPH have developed searches for events composed of a pair of leptons with significant missing energy and momentum, and have ruled out the production of sleptons with masses up to close to half the available energy.
Similarly, searches have been made for the case when the slepton is long-lived, and would be seen as a very heavy charged particle traversing the ALEPH detector.
All the data recorded with the ALEPH detector in 1999, at energies between 192 and 204 GeV, have been processed, searching for events consistent with the slepton signal.

Wisconsin team narrows search for Higgs boson (Sep 19, 2000)
With time running out for Europe's largest particle accelerator, a team of Wisconsin physicists may be tantalizingly close to being among the first to see the Higgs boson, the subatomic particle that is responsible for endowing all matter with mass.
But with strong hints of the Higgs boson emerging from ALEPH and possibly a hint from one other detector DELPHI, CERN officials have extended the life of LEP by a month, giving scientists an opportunity to collect more data in the hope of firming up observations of Higgs candidates.
In this, the final year of LEP operations, the collision energy of LEP was pushed to the highest level yet achieved, thanks to the excellent work of the accelerator physicists at CERN, bringing new opportunities for discovery, Wu says.

These symmetries, called gauge symmetries, are not spatial symmetries, rather they are symmetries of the quantum charges carried by the matter fields, like the phase invariance of small electric circuits.
This work, which also takes a lot of my time, has the added bonus that it not only allows us to study theoretical predictions in detail, it also provides high-accuracy computer simulations of particle collisions which can be used by experimenters for detector design and performance studies, and for calibration of the final experiment.
