ALSA -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Some of the goals of the ALSA project was to support automatic configuration of sound card hardware, and graceful handling of multiple sound devices in a system, goals which it has largely met.
ALSA provides 100% backward compatability to OSS while adding automatic multiplex sound streams, meaning you can play many sound streams at the same time without a sound server such as ESD (GNOME) and (Studies intended to provide general knowledge and intellectual skills (rather than occupational or professional skills)) aRts (KDE).
ALSA also requires its own sound drivers for sound cards, as the old OSS drivers are now also obsolete.

Introduction to Sound Programming with ALSA | Linux Journal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
ALSA is a good choice if you are performing low-level audio functions for maximum control and performance or want to make use of special features not supported by other sound APIs.
The ALSA Project was started because the sound drivers in the Linux kernel (OSS/Free drivers) were not being maintained actively and were lagging behind the capabilities of new sound technology.

On the ALSA Track | Linux Journal
Like Linux itself, ALSA began with rather modest goals: Jaroslav simply wanted more out of his Gravis UltraSound soundcard than the existing API could deliver, and he was willing and able to meet the demands of the task.
ALSA's features and popularity grew to a point when users and developers began lobbying for utilizing ALSA to replace the OSS/Free system packaged with the kernel sources.
ALSA provides alsaconf (see Figure 1), which is fine for simple card configurations, but it's not so good with systems having multiple cards, nor does it handle loading the virtual or dummy drivers.

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide
ALSA is the default sound subsystem in the 2.6 kernel thereby replacing OSS (Open Sound System), which was used in the 2.4 kernels.
ALSA's main features include efficient support for all types of audio interfaces ranging from consumer sound cards to professional sound equipment, fully modularized drivers, SMP and thread safety, backward compatibility with OSS and a user-space library alsa-lib to make application development a breeze.
The main difference between using alsa-driver and ALSA that comes with the kernel is that alsa-driver is generally more up to date than the version in the kernel.
