They were a hardcore alt country / cow-punk band that used to play with LA bands like "X," "The Blasters," and even, in the early days, REM.
Along with Brent and his band, the show--which is being hosted by Jim Stacho of the Old Town Folk School in Chicago--will feature a full lineup of Chicago country and alt country musicians performing the music of Steve Earle.

 Alt.music.yes FAQ
Although the basic music for Frankie's first album had been written by the band, Horn was unhappy with their performing abilities, so only the two vocalists would actually have anything to do with recording their first album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984), which included the third biggest ever UK single, "Relax".
Yes discussion was dominating alt.music.progressive (which subsequently moved to rec.music.progressive) and it was felt that a separate Yes newsgroup was appropriate, following the existing model of groups like alt.music.pink-floyd and alt.music.marillion.
The best WWW site for Yes is the band's official page, YesWorld, which is linked to Notes from the Edge, the web-accessible (and former e-mailed) Yes fan newsletter.

However, to like a alternative rock band's one hit song and to be a fan of that alternative rock band are two very different things.
Maybe Sugar Ray is known for their catchy summer ballads, but I like them for their good humor, their varieties of styles, the fact that Sugar Ray is not just a alt.
Sugar Ray has created a niche for music fans who enjoy a little bit of hip hop, light-hearted, harmless pop and at the same time, true heavy alt/punk/metal rock fans at heart.

Fastball: Keep Your Wig On - PopMatters Music Review
It's rare to see a band "survive" having a massive hit single and evolve into a career act (Nada Surf is trying, but the alt-rock highway is littered with the carcasses of the likes of say, the Toadies), but it looks like Fastball may have avoided the curse.
But the band broke through as '90s mainstream alt-rock (a contradiction?) gasped its last, only to be replaced by lunkheaded nu-metal; Fastball's roots-pop sound was frozen out of rock-radio airplay.
It's a shame the band released a greatest-hits album back in 2002 (the premature Painting the Corners covers all of three albums) because much, if not most, of Keep Your Wig On deserves a slot in the band's greatest-hits canon.

 Alt Rock? What's That?
So, this time I counted the number of times the phrase "alt rock" was mentioned on Google-indexed web pages along with names of assorted American 80s or 90s rock bands.
I put in Van Halen and the Beatles just to confirm that the alt and indie indices are measuring something different from just being a rock band.
So, "loud early 90s American rock band" does not equal "alt." These bands are clearly a well-defined genre.

 Liars Academy: Demons Aversion.com Review
Slowly bands like Jimmy Eat World, Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse are pushing out all the mall-punk nonsense and alt-pop hogwash that’s been the meat and potatoes of rock radio since grunge imploded.
The band’s songs would make great radio singles — stirring everyone from Matchbox Twenty holdovers to the hipper Jimmy Eat set — but the band’s hooks are never big enough, sharp enough or thrown out with enough power to make them stick.
It’s a wise move, as it sheds some of the generic qualities that plagued the band’s early release, instead proffering a mix of air-guitar ready arrangements and humungous vocal hooks.

X-Girlfriend - "Chick rock with Attitude"
While spending over two years in the alt-rock cover band, Milhouse, Rik grew tiresome of the songs that could not only be heard by Milhouse, but also a variety of bands all across the region's clubs.
It was a switch for John in December 2002 when he joined alt-rock band Milhouse, where he met up with bassist Rik Menconi and signed on to the vision for X-GirlFriend.
While most of the bands that Rik has played in focused on the specific genre of music of '90's rock to current radio hits, it was his short stint in the female fronted band, Zu Zu's Petals, that created the vision of what has come to be X-GirlFriend.
