  Broadcast Signals
Radio communication is typically in the form of AM radio or FM Radio transmissions.
When information is broadcast from an AM radio station, the electrical image of the sound (taken from a microphone or other program source) is used to modulate the amplitude of the carrier wave transmitted from the broadcast antenna of the radio station.
This is in contrast to AM radio where the signal is used to modulate the amplitude of the carrier.

Howstuffworks "How the Radio Spectrum Works"
When you listen to a radio station and the announcer says, "You are listening to 91.5 FM WRKX The Rock!," what the announcer means is that you are listening to a radio station broadcasting an FM radio signal at a frequency of 91.5 megahertz, with FCC-assigned call letters of WRKX.
In the same way, AM radio is confined to a band from 535 kilohertz to 1,700 kilohertz (kilo meaning "thousands," so 535,000 to 1,700,000 cycles per second).
The first radio broadcasts occurred in 1906 or so, and frequency allocation for AM radio occurred during the 1920s (The predecessor to the FCC was established by Congress in 1927.).

An AM radio receiver according to claim 1, wherein said voltage adjustment circuit comprises a first variable resistor connected between the reference voltage source and the ground, and a second variable resistor connected between said first variable resistor and said variable voltage source; and said local oscillator circuit is connected to said second variable resistor.
Further, the AM radio receiver according to the present is designed such that the characteristic curves of the variable capacitance diodes of the local oscillator circuit are adjusted by means of the capacitance element connected in series with the oscillator coil of the local oscillator circuit.

DRM, a digital AM radio system that operates on broadcast bands below 30 MHz, is broadcast by more than 65 stations worldwide, though not in the United States, where Senger believes the battle over digital radio is far from over.
That's where software-defined digital radio might be able to waltz in through the back door, making the battle over digital radio formats almost moot.
Existing AM transmitters can be reused for DRM transmission: all it takes is a DRM exciter, which can be plugged in, holding broadcasters' investment to a minimum.

Arizona AM Radio Station, - Inc. Article
Outlook The halcyon days of AM radio have passed (FM currently gets three listeners to AM's one; 20 years ago it was the other way around), but businesses like this one can still represent an opportunity.
After a decade in which buying radio stations was increasingly fashionable and increasingly expensive, the credit-tight, ad-poor '90s have cut the average price of an AM outlet almost in half -- to $600,000.
Most AMs fetch six times earnings (FMs are closer to eight), but analysts say that any multiple above five might make it tough for the new owner of this operation -- a stand-alone in a mostly rural market -- to service the debt.
