 AM broadcasting - ArticleWorld
The radio waves used in broadcasting have to be modulated before being transmitted, a process in which audio-frequency waves are super-imposed over carrier waves.
AM was the most dominant method of radio broadcasting initially and continues to be popular today.
AM radio broadcasting, as explained above, involves the modification of the amplitude of audio frequency signal received from the microphone.

AM broadcasting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using Amplitude Modulation.
Some microbroadcasters and pirate radio broadcasters, especially those in the United States under the FCC's Part 15 rules, broadcast on AM to achieve greater range than is possible on the FM band.
Hobbyists also use low-power AM transmitters to provide local programming for antique radio equipment in areas where AM programming is not widely available or is of questionable quality; in such cases the transmitter, which is designed to cover only the immediate property and perhaps nearby areas, is hooked up to a computer or music player.

 AM Stereo History
Many AM stations still offered attractive programming and had high ratings, but listeners were no longer turning to AM as their primary source for musical entertainment on the radio.
There were five different AM Stereo systems being proposed to the FCC, and the FCC struggled with the decision of which one to choose as the single standard for AM Stereo broadcasting.
AM Stereo is an established standard, it works very well, and it is affordable to both stations and listeners.

So, while FM and television stereo broadcasts were readily accepted due to the quick availability of stereo broadcasts and stereo receivers, AM stereo languished.
Sure, most AM stations in Los Angeles either broadcast in stereo or at the minimum send out a stereo "beacon" that switches on the higher-fidelity mode of some recent AM tuners.
In other words, while I don't think AM stereo will catch on at this late time (it's been available since the early 1980s and digital broadcasts may be just around the corner), I still hope it does.

Not only did AM circuitry in these radios stop advancing, but in most instances, manufacturers actually downgraded the AM sections of their radios for the sake of cost savings, due to apathy and lack of public demand.
Because these exciters are retrofitted onto transmitters which were never designed for AM stereo operation, they also must contain corrective equalizers and adjustable delay networks, to insure that all of the phase relationships are correct at the modulated stage of the transmitter.
Each AM station is allowed to transmit one stereo digital channel, and cannot stream multiple channels, as in the case of FM HD Radio.

Method and apparatus for AM compatible digital broadcasting - Patent 6452977
The use of digital audio broadcasting in the AM band (530 kHz to 1700 kHz) would provide AM broadcasting stations with a means to compete with high quality portable audio sources such as cassette tapes and compact disc players.
When this technique is applied to AM radio broadcasts, the broadcasting can be done in the same frequency band and at the same carrier frequencies that are currently allocated for AM broadcasting.
This broadcasting is accomplished by transmitting a digital waveform by way of a plurality of orthogonal frequency division modulated (OFDM) carriers, some of which are modulated in-quadrature with the analog AM signal and are positioned within the spectral region where the standard AM broadcasting signal has significant energy.

AM Stereo in the USA      (FCC) USA
AM Stereo was first proposed to the Commission in 1958 and 1959 separately by Philco Corporation, Radio Corporation of America, and Kahn Research Laboratories, Inc. On September 27, 1961 [21 RR 1616c], the Commission denied these requests for a rulemaking proceeding on the subject, stating
Contrary to the circumstances which motivated the rule amendments authorizing and standardizing stereophonic transmissions by FM broadcasting stations, there is little evidence of public need or industry desire for similar rule changes with respect to stereophonic transmissions by standard broadcast stations.
As neither broadcasters nor receiver manufacturers wanted to invest in what could be a losing system, effective implementation of AM stereo in the USA was delayed.

A: This depends on where you are located and how you define “broadcasting.” In the United States, Canada and some other countries, the law permits you to radiate very weak signals in the broadcast bands as long as you do not interfere with licensed stations.
A: In the FM broadcast band (88 to 108 MHz), you are limited to a field strength no greater than 250 microvolts per meter at a distance of 3 meters from the transmitting antenna.
There is much more energy in an AM signal when the modulation level is at 90% than when it is at 50%, so a compressor/limiter helps to boost your range by keeping your modulation level as high as possible for as much of the time as possible.
