Topic: AM broadcast radio

AM broadcasting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because of its susceptibility to atmospheric interference and generally lower-fidelity sound, AM broadcasting is better suited to talk radio and news programming, while music radio and public radio mostly shifted to FM broadcasting in the late 1960s and 1970s.
AM radio began with the first, experimental broadcast in 1906 by Reginald Fessenden, and was used for small-scale voice and music broadcasts up until World War I.
However, after sunset, changes in the ionosphere cause AM signals to travel by skywave, enabling AM radio stations to be heard much farther from their point of origin than is normal during the day.

radio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-17)
Although the word 'radio' is used to describe this phenomenon, the transmissions which we know as television, radio, radar, and cell phone are all in the class of radio frequency emissions.
AM radio uses amplitude modulation, in which louder sounds at the microphone causes wider fluctuations in the transmitter power while the transmitter frequency remains unchanged.
Radio remote control: Use of radio waves to transmit control data to a remote object as in some early forms of guided missile, some early TV remotes and a range of model boats, cars and aeroplanes.

Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation, and are created whenever a charged object accelerates with a frequency that lies in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Radio was used to pass on orders and communications between armies and navies on both sides in World War I; Germany used radio communications for diplomatic messages once its submarine cables were cut by the British.
Radio amateurs are able to use frequencies in a large number of narrow bands throughout the radio spectrum.

 LF Engineering AM Broadcast
AM radio broadcast, the original RF broadcast medium, may not be in its heyday any longer but it is still live and well and operating between 530 kHz and 1705 kHz.
Not only did AM circuitry in broadcast radios stop advancing, but in most instances manufacturers actually downgraded the AM section of their radios for the sake of cost savings.
Today, your typical AM or AM/FM receiver, whether for car or for home will not have the same quality of AM fidelity, sensitivity, or selectivity that could be found in similar receivers built before the mid 1960's.

Radio at Sea (1891-1916) - The first major use of radio was for navigation, where it greatly reduced the isolation of ships, saving thousands of lives, even though for the first couple of decades radio was generally limited to Morse Code transmissions.
Radio During World War One (1914-1919) - Civilian radio activities were suspended during the war, as the radio industry was taken over by the government.
Broadcasting Becomes Widespread (1922-1923) - Led by Westinghouse's 1920 and 1921 establishment of four well-financed stations -- located in or near Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago and New York City -- there was a growing sense of excitement as broadcasting activities became more organized.

Because in AM broadcasting, the tower is the antenna, and because there is an inverse relationship between the frequency of an AM broadcast radio signal and the wavelength of the signal, the antennas must be a certain minimum height in order to radiate.
The design of any directional AM broadcast station is complex and "tuning" a directional antenna array is critically dependent on the efficiency of the antennas as constructed.
FCC technical standards for AM antennas are rigidly adhered to, and are not subject to variation at the whim of a municipality which desires not to permit any antennas at all.

When you listen to an AM radio broadcast, your radio is tuning in to a sine wave with a frequency of around 1,000,000 cycles per second (cycles per second is also known as hertz).
For example, 680 on the AM dial is 680,000 cycles per second.
FM radio signals are operating in the range of 100,000,000 hertz, so 101.5 on the FM dial is a transmitter generating a sine wave at 101,500,000 cycles per second.
