CanadianDriver: Motoring Memories - AMC Pacer
The Pacer was originally to have the compact Wankel rotary engine under its sloping hood, but when development problems prevented that, AMC used its long, overhead-valve, inline six.
Suspension was basic AMC: A-arms and coil springs in front, and leaf springs and a solid axle at the rear.
Because the Pacer's width was virtually that of a full-size car it used the large Matador's rear axle.

American Motors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AMC is generally thought of as the brand used for all American Motors passenger cars following the demise of Rambler, but the names "American Motors" and "AMC" seem to have been used interchangeably in corporate literature and on the cars themselves well into the 1980s.
AMC's Toledo, Ohio plants continue to turn out Jeep Wranglers and Libertys as well as parts and components for Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles (although Toledo Machining and Forge is slated for closure as of 2005).
AMC's technologically advanced Bramalea Assembly and Stamping Plants in Ontario (recently completed at the the time of the Chrysler takeover) are still active, and now produce the best-selling LX-cars - the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, and the Chrysler 300.

 AMC Pacer - TheBestLinks.com - Automobile, Wankel engine, 1980, 1971, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-25)
The AMC Pacer was a two-door, compact car produced in the USA by American Motors Corporation between 1975 and 1980, although design started in 1971.
This left the Pacer without an engine, and while a replacement was quickly found, this was in the form of AMC's existing straight-6 engine and transmission, necessitating rear wheel drive.
The Pacer's drawbacks, aside from unusual looks, included a lack of cargo space (thanks to the fuel tank being relocated to the trunk) and a lack of power; the Pacer was quite heavy and the AMC straight six quite old and underpowered.

 AMC Pacer History
AMC experimented with various designs, as concept drawings show, among them mid-engine concepts, front-wheel drive, and more usual body widths.
AMC had quite a problem, now that the new compact car was ready, and they were not able to start all over again.
The heavy engines used in the Pacer not only impaired its handling, but they put more load on the front suspension than intended, which caused the rack and pinion steering to fail frequently in the Pacers built in 1975.

AMC Pacer is the iconic car of the 70s, which defines the era even more than a Bee Gees track or the Farrah Fawcet hairstyle.
Due to poor sales, AMC introduced a wagon but only 1,341 coupes and 305 wagons were sold the last year in 1980.
Iconic car of the 70s, the Pacer is a symbol of the American automotive industry's utter confusion in the face of new changes and competition from the Japanese.
