Taking the engines as groups or families, the 290 and 343 form a group, with 3.75" bore and 3.28" stroke for the 290, and a 4.08" bore and 3.28" stroke for the 343.
The 390 engine is by itself at 4.165" and 3.574" bore and stroke, and the 401 measures 4.165" by 3.68".
Engineers caution that no metal should be removed from the inlet end of the port up to the point where the turn starts toward the throat, with the exception of casting flaws.

V8 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A V8 engine is a V engine with eight cylinders.
The V8 is a common engine configuration in the highest echelons of motorsport, especially in the USA where it is required in IRL, ChampCar and NASCAR.
The Holden small block V8 was an all Australian designed and manufactured cast-iron 90 degree pushrod OHV engine, manufactured in the capacities of 4.2 L (253 in³), 5.0 L (308 in³), later destroked to 304 in³), and 5.7 L (348 in³), later stroked to 350 in³).

AMC always made a good automobile, and though they may not have enjoyed the mainstream sales and success of the "Big Three" automakers, their cars and engines remain cult classics of sorts today.
Though AMC did have a V8 prior to this, they were large block motors, and though capable of great power, the were less suitable for a market that had been increasingly dominated by the innovative Chevy V8 and Mopar V8 Small Blocks (since 1955) and the Ford V8 Small Block (since 1963).

The GEN-1 engine is physically the size of a big-block Ford or GM engine, and is sometimes called a "big-block".
It is believed that AMC kept the 390 this last year due to the reputation it had garnered in the two seater AMX, which was discontinued after 1970.
The AMC 360 in³ (5.9 L) 360 produced 235 to 245 hp (175 to 183 kW) in 1970 to early 71, 175 to 220 hp from mid 71-75, 140-180 hp in 1976, 129 hp in 1977, and 140 hp from 1978-91.

Like any engine, the AMC V8 can be made to perform with an investment of money, time, and planning, using many stock parts and a few items from the unfortunately limited supply in the performance aftermarket.
When it comes to building an AMC engine of specific displacement, the whole problem of mating blocks to cranks, rods, pistons, and pins will have to be dealt with, and there are important differences in size and quality in all of these components.
AMC dealers do have a small selection of manifolds to sell, though, and the most popular one is the 3199763 for ’70-'72 engines.

The AMC Gremlin - AMC's successful compact car
AMC was successful in beating both GM and Ford to the punch with this program, since neither the Chevrolet Vega nor the Ford Pinto were introduced until September, 1970 (as 1971 models).
By 1970, AMC had become a car company that was trying to be all things to all people, instead of concentrating on the economy end of the market as had been done successfully under George Romney during the late 1950s and early '60s.
These engines were the tried-and-true AMC seven main bearing sixes that had gained a reputation for durability and economy since their introduction in mid-1964.

AMC never produced a factory four bolt main bearing engine as they felt the two bolt cap was adequate, but they did cast the webs thick enough to be drilled for aftermarket four bolt main caps for racing purposes.
AMC decided to keep the forgings, either due to low numbers of the engines or to retain high reliability.

Below are pictures showing the details of the Rambler 327 V8 engine block, as well as a comparison in size and design of the AMC (Gen II) and Rambler (Gen I) V8 engines.
The Rambler rod is 1.00" wide, while the AMC 390 rod is 0.92" wide.
These longer forged Rambler rods would be a good candidate for use in a 390/401 AMC V8, if the crank's rod journals were widened.

Novak Conversions - General Engine Conversion Options
If too small an engine is used for the work to be done, it will operate at low vacuum for longer periods and use more gas than a larger engine that would not be working as hard.
Engine and vehicle management computers are now a major part of modern automotive systems, and therefore, a significant concern when doing a conversion.
AMC V8's have always made good power and have some good design built into them, but the increasing obsolescence in their parts drive the costs of maintenance up.

AMC and S-P went ahead with their first tentative plans toward merger, which would have been agreed upon while Mason was still alive, and which involved offering the smaller Clipper version of the new Packard V8 in 1955 Nash Ambassadors and the new Nash-bodied Hudson Hornets.
This was because the AMC V8 went into what had been the shorter Nash Statesman/Hudson Wasp platform, which had been powered by Nash and Hudson sixes respectively up to that time.

The AMC Hornet was an attempt to meld the frugal image of the Rambler with an image of luxury into a new type of compact car.
While the high option cars are most valued by current AMC collectors, the low option Hornets make good hot rods by merit of their relatively simple lightweight all steel unibody and very good interchangeability of factory performance parts, making an AMC 401 V8 engine basically a bolt in modification.
The AMC Hornet as a collector car is supported with active, loyal AMC enthusiast clubs for part sourcing and information.
