In benchmarks, it outperforms the AMD 5x86 at the same clockspeed but, unlike the AMC chip, cannot normally be overclocked (although this is subject to correction as more experience becomes available).
Since you can get close to 100 MHz Pentium performance with either the Cyrix or AMD 5x86s and their prices are lower than the comparable Pentium CPUs, buying a new motherboard optimized to use them is a practical upgrade option.

I dont think that AMD was blowing smoke when they announced strong expectations for barcelona.But with no benches its hard to judge,and most are so dismayed with AMD's reaction so far ;they are thinking the worst.
I am starting to think that maybe we should not be judging AMD on their 3 years of success, but rather on the rest of their history.
AMD has the capability to catch up, I believe, but I don't think that they can recover well enough to actually overcome Intel's Core2 technology anytime soon.

If you install the raw Am5x86 CPU, but you can't get the Am5x86 jumpers setting from the motherboard or system manufacturer, then start by setting all jumpers as for the Intel 486DX4-100 or, even better, the AMD Enhanced Am486DX4-100.
