AMD K9 quad core benchmarked against Intel offerings
And so if he says as he does that AMD's K9 here will be a quad core baby and performs pretty well, then we're very inclined to believe him.
And when he produces benchmarks of the K9, as he does here, then we at the INQ ain't going to quibble.
Course the K9 is gonna have to compete against an Intel four core Whitefield creature and by then presumably Chipzilla will have all of its famous ducks in some kind of row.

AMD K9 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
K9 appears originally to have been an ambitious 8 issue per clock cycle core redesign of the K7/K8.
At one point, K9 was the Greyhound project (Now is in K8L) at AMD, and was worked on by the K7 team beginning in February or March 2001, with tape-out A0 scheduled for 2003.
Some claim the cancellation of the K nomenclature is likely an attempt by AMD to avoid ridicule caused by the similarities between "K9" and "canine", but this is only conjecture, considering K7 and K8 were only internal codenames for the processors that AMD marketed as the Athlon and the Athlon 64, respectively.

AMD64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AMD's x86-64 instruction set (later renamed AMD64) is an extension of Intel's IA-32 (x86-32) architecture.
AMD was the first x86-family vendor to support no-execute in linear addressing mode.
Complete in-tree support for the platform was achieved prior to the hardware's initial release due to AMD's loaning of several machines for the project's hackathon that year.

AMD K9 The AMD K9 generation of CPUs was the codename used to refer to dual core K8 processors.
However, AMD has since decided to stop referring to upcoming CPUs by K numbers.
While many people thought the K9 was a complete core redesign, that is reserved for what would have been the K10.

AMD hatches new naming plan for chip generations | CNET News.com
AMD's K was a counterpart to Intel's P designation for chip families such as the P5 (the first Pentium) and the P6, which included both the Pentium II and III.
Now, however, AMD has done away with the designation because it has launched a strategy to enter a wider variety of markets.
AMD has separate design teams working on server chips, desktop chips, standard notebook chips, low-power notebook chips and inexpensive chips for Internet appliances and consumer electronics, said Dirk Meyer, executive vice president of AMD's Computation Products Group.

AMD later produced the 80286, or 286, under the same arrangement, but then Intel cancelled the agreement in 1986, and refused to hand over technical details of the i386 part.
AMD also adopted a model numbering system similar to a PR rating to supersede clock rate for differentiating their processors, which would supposedly project the clock rate relative performance of these new Athlons versus the earliest versions of the Athlon.
Bolstered by its vastly improved reputation and credibilty, AMD was able to avoid being marginalized at the low end of the market as they had been when they were shipping the K6 as their flagship product.

DriverHeaven.net - AMD K9 to Be Taped Out Using Opteron Processors?
Moreover, AMD will hardly tape out the K9 in course of the next couple of years and in three years time AMD Athlon XP will be completely forgotten.
So, it is quite logical to assume AMD will utilize its own x86-64 (or AMD64 as the company likes to call this architecture now) Opteron chips for taping out the next-generation product.
Given a lot of postpones of the K8 aka Hammer architecture due to design and manufacturing issues, we may actually expect AMD to present the K9 relatively shortly after the K8 is on the market.
