Microprocessor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A seminal microprocessor in the world of spaceflight was RCA's RCA 1802 (aka CDP1802, RCA COSMAC) (introduced in 1976) which was used in NASA's Voyager and Viking spaceprobes of the 1970s, and onboard the Galileo probe to Jupiter (launched 1989, arrived 1995).
Other early multi-chip 16-bit microprocessors include one used by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the LSI-11 OEM board set and the packaged PDP 11/03 minicomputer, and the Fairchild Semiconductor MicroFlame 9440, both of which were introduced in the 1975 to 1976 timeframe.
These microprocessors were used in the ATandT 3B5 and 3B15 minicomputers; in the 3B2, the world's first desktop supermicrocomputer; in the "Companion", the world's first 32-bit laptop computer; and in "Alexander", the world's first book-sized supermicrocomputer, featuring ROM-pack memory cartridges similar to today's gaming consoles.

Opteron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AMD Opteron is the first eighth-generation x86 processor (K8 core), and the first of AMD's AMD64 (x86-64) processors, released April 22, 2003.
The Opteron approach to multi-processing is not the same as standard symmetric multiprocessing as instead of having one bank of memory for all CPUs, each CPU has its own memory.
Next-Generation AMD Opteron processors are offered in three series: the 1000 Series (up to 1P/2-core), the 2000 Series (up to 2P/4-core), and the 8000 Series (4P/8-core to 8P/16-core).

During this time, AMD attempted to embrace the perceived shift towards RISC with their own AMD 29K processor, and they attempted to diversify into graphics and audio devices as well as flash memory.
AMD later produced the 80286, or 286, under the same arrangement, but then Intel cancelled the agreement in 1986, and refused to hand over technical details of the i386 part.
AMD also adopted a PR rating for their processors, which would supposedly project the clock rate relative performance of these new Athlons versus the earliest versions of the Athlon.

Earlier all AMD Opteron microprocessors for uni-processor, dual-processor and multi-processor applications used Socket 940 infrastructure and required registered memory modules to be installed.
Currently there are three dual-core AMD Opteron 100-series chips in the lineup that is to ship in 30 days: models 165 (1.80GHz), 170 (2.00GHz) and 175 (2.20GHz) that cost from $417 to $530 depending on the model in 1000-unit quantities.
AMD will continue to deliver AMD Opteron 100 Series processors using registered memory and Socket 940to existing customers that require them, including customers who are designing high-end products based on the AMD64 embedded processor roadmap, the company noted.

Opteron is the name of a family of CPUs within the AMD64 line, designed by AMD for the server market.
For Socket F and Socket AM2 Opterons, the second digit (the Z) identifies the memory type: presently, only 2 (for DDR2) is used.
For all Opterons, he last two digits in the model number (the YY) give an indication of the speed of the CPU.
