  WACCI Issue 138 - 08 - Programmers' Patch
The Amstrad CPC and PCW series use a disc format compatible with CP/M. In the case of the CPC series, Amsdos is compatible with CP/M 2.2, whereas the PCW uses CP/M Plus (also known as CP/M 3.1).
The side switch forces the drive to access the other side of the disc, but the computer still thinks it is the first side, so when you format side two, the H values being laid down will be zero, just like those on side one.
Firstly, Amsdos (and Parados) rely on the lowest sector number on the track to identify the physical disc format.

Note if you set the date and time and then exit to amsdos then the date and time will be reset.
Also when writing to the printer you must specify b: before the file name but does not really matter when you are using a one drive.

 WACCI Issue 138 - 03 - A to Z of the CPC
Unlike AMSDOS, where the OS is stored in ROM, CP/M is stored on disk.
On the CPC, the equivalent of this titchy ROM program is the CPM command, which is one of the RSXes set up by AMSDOS.
It would be like the Mac OS with the menus, icons and pointer removed; or Linux without the ability to type in a command; or, come to think of it, AMSDOS without Locomotive BASIC.

What's more the emulator very cleverly adjusts the size of the window to remove the fl border around the edge, no matter what the size of the used screen area.
Andreas also supplies with CPCEmu his CPCXtract program which performs various filing activities on AMSDOS disk images, allowing files to be listed, extracted, added and the disk write-protected.
You even have to select the side of the disk to act on, since on the real CPC you literally had to take the 3" disk out of the drive, rotate through 180°, and put it back in the drive.

Extra BASIC functions was also builtinto the DDI-1 disk drive interface, allowing the CPC 464 user to access the AMSDOS disk operating system, and thus the disk drive(s), through BASIC.
The final CPC offerings, known asthe 'Plus' range, also included the GX4000 video game console, and was a massive commercial failure, not least due to limited game releases from other companies (in-house software divisionAmsoft couldn't fill the need).

Lots of OS's have been written in assembler in the past, including the CPC firmware, BASIC, AMSDOS, CP/M, similarly with most other machines of the time.
I've done lots of development in lots of languages, and I actually find higher level languages more bug-prone, especially C/C++.

No ORG statement is included in the library so a program intended for AMSDOS should start with: #asm ORG 4000H ; (or whatever the start address is to be) #endasm #include..
The machine code is built up in memory before it is saved to disk so the programs should not be too enormous.
