BORELLI CONSULTING: Off-Duty & Back Up Weapons
So, I was stuck, by my own desires and beliefs, with a backup gun that I could really only carry during the colder months, in a shoulder holster under my parka.
Then in 1992 I went to work for an agency that didn't permit backup guns and my only issue was whether or not my duty weapon and off-duty weapon functioned similarly enough that I wouldn't mix up my mechanical skills under stress.
Second, I felt that a backup gun should function as much like the primary duty weapon as possible: identically if that was possible.

The AMT may be smaller, but is LOTS heavier than the Colt and Kimber lightweight models.
Maybe AMT wanted a heavy trigger, I really don't know, but people are always getting trigger jobs to lighten trigger pull on guns they buy.
I wasn't there when the AMT was designed, but the company is notorious for making guns with reliability problems.

Hence the AMT 380 which fits nicely in my back pocket in an Uncle Mike's pocket "sheath" holster.
The AMT is fast becoming relegated to cut off shorts and tanktop wear only and even then I've been able to pack the P11 if the T-shirt is long enough to guard against an accidental exposure to my right rear pants waistline in which the Kel-tec is stuffed.

AMT 45 Backup: Should I buy? [Archive] - TheFiringLine Forums
I have shot the AMT 45 Backup and it is not near the top of my list.
I started having problems around 500rds,stovepipes etc..and lost faith in it,I retuned it to amt and they said it was a magazine spring failer and returned it with two new mags,I never fired it again,I believe i tradded in on a new SandW 6906.
I'm thinking that the Backup would be heavy enough to feel like a "real gun" but light enough to be shoved in your pants pocket for a few minutes while answering the door.

I have an AMT Backup in.45 and can't see the need for a smaller pistol.
A 1911 type.45 is just as easily concealed as a smaller.380 unless you're packing a pistol in a pocket, where a backup gun, not a primary self defense piece, should be, and that should be a small 5-shot steel.357 whenever possible (none of that lightweight stuff that hurts when you shoot it).
If I were to win the lottery, I'd buy a TRS or other similar gun in 45acp.

Longtime Readers will know that I’m no fan of DA semi-auto pistols, but if I’m going to shoot a DA, it’s most likely going to be a Kahr.
Me, I’m looking hard at the P45 as a backup gun, because with a backup, you want it to come out firing, and the Kahr will do that, without fail.
I don’t know what the P45’s trigger is like, but if it’s like any of Kahr’s other guns, my bet is that it will be as smooth as silk, with just a little pressure towards the end of the pull.

The Glock 20 is also a VERY good choice for LEO purposes, particularly where officers answer a call to a "shots fired" scene, and MAY have to be in a situation where a powerful caliber will defeat FBI test type barriers, AND an officer may need to wait for backup.
