  ERBzine 1494: Unravelling Amtor
The Amtor cartographers had no concept of even the existence of a northern hemisphere, their cosmology would not even allow for it.
Amtor's seas would seem to be both smaller and shallower.
Amtor seems to be around 50 to 60%.

ERBzine 1495: Anthropology on Amtor by Den Valdron
The surface of Amtor is almost as monotonous and free of diversity as that of Pellucidar.
Amtor is still thinly populated, the population having only a handful of millennia to expand.
For the Amtor culture to rise to the level of technology, and a comparative rate of metal use, as current Earth society, it would find its mining efforts immensely, perhaps even prohibitively expensive, and it simply might not be able to find enough metal at all.

Amtor, Gtor, Pactor, Rtty, and several other modes (such as, Clover, Packet, Pactor II) co-exist in this small range of frequencies.
Amtor FEC and Rtty are transmitted as a continuous stream of data.
Amtor has a short cycle (about 1/2 second) and is chirpy sounding.

 Introduction to Digital Modes
AMTOR can be thought of as a more advanced form of RTTY which includes automatic acknowledgement of each group of characters sent, or a request for repeat.
The main feature of AMTOR is that it uses the Moore code, which is made up of seven unit characters (bits), but utilising a select few of the possible combinations, thus allowing a receiving station to tell if a received code is correct or not.
AMTOR operation involves the transmitting station sending three characters, then waiting for a response from the receiving station.

This mode is the primary Amtor mode, and is used for QSOs only.

PacComm PacTOR Controller   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
AMTOR (based on SITOR) was specifically developed for HF radio text communication.
The synchronous transmission format and short frame size of AMTOR are retained for excellent performance under poor propagation.
The result of this protocol design is a hardware/software system which gives a four-fold throughput increase over AMTOR while continuing to be useable for typical ham QSOs to which RTTY and AMTOR operators have become accustomed.

 ERB WorldFAQS
Amtor is Edgar Rice Burroughs' science fantasy version of Venus, a world which in his day (1875-1950) was known to be shrouded by an impenetrable cloud cover.
Amtor is covered by a very thick layer of clouds which occasionally open and reveal the sun to its inhabitants, who think their world is surrounded by an all-devouring fire.
The great warships of Amtor are an anocronistic assemblage of technology and crude, primitive crews (they use flags to communicate).

 AMTOR - a Whatis.com definition
AMTOR (amateur teleprinting over radio) is a digital communications method used by radio amateurs, in which the frequency of errors is reduced by handshaking or character repetition.
There are two modes in AMTOR, known as automatic repeat request (ARQ) or Mode A, and forward error correction (FEC) or Mode B. In ARQ mode, handshaking is used between the source (transmitting station) and destination (receiving station).
AMTOR was adapted in the 1980s by Peter Martinez, an English amateur radio operator, from

 ERBmania! - Amtor
As if the native life forms were not naturally terrifying, the scientists of Amtor (or maybe "wizards") have discovered how to animate the dead--building cities populated by zombies.
To them their planet is bowl-shaped with the arctic regions at the bottom and the rim of the planet eternally on fire (the equator).
All maps of Amtor are distorted by this inverse topology and are, therefore, quite useless even to the Amtorians.

The advantage of AMTOR over talking on the microphone is that AMTOR works well even when propagation is poor and signals are weak.
AMTOR will get through when no other means will work and you can use worldwide relay stations to accomplish this automatically with hardly any effort on your part.
Amtor Packet LINK (APLINK) stations are ham stations who's equipment are set on automatic operation to receive, store, and send AMTOR messages without operator intervention and APLINK stations can forward your messages automatically from one station to another until they reach their destination.

The world of Amtor (as the Venusians call their planet), like Barsoom, is very advanced in some ways and very backwards in others.
Amtorians think their world is a flat disc, and if you travel to the rim you might freeze to death in the frozen wastes at the edge, and if you venture toward the center of the disc you could die from the heat.
With fish men, beast men, plant men and even amoeba men causing mischief, a trip to Amtor is bound to be loaded with adventure and thrills.

 Pactor Protocol Description
The basic PT transmission frame is very similar to AMTOR; blocks (packets) containing data information are acknowledged by short control signals (CS) sent out by the receiving station.
The fl data illustrate the performance of the Amtor ARQ mode, the orange data illustrate the performance of the 50+ year old 45 baud RTTY mode, whereas the grey data illustrate the very popular PSK-31 mode.** In these last three data runs, the data simply illustrate the transfer speed of legible ASCII data.
Unlike pactor, RTTY, Amtor, and PSK-31 are not 100% error free and the actual transferred files are found at the following three links: RTTY screen dump, AMTOR screen dump, and PSK-31 screen dump.

Then, in modifying the SITOR protocol Peter Martinez, G3PLX developed AMTOR (SITOR-B) in 1982, not the Edgar Rice Burroughs Venusian planet, but rather the first HF digital mode using an error-free protocol.
During about 10 years its distinctive and sympathetic chirp-chirp signal sent at 100 bauds was familiar on HF bands until it was superseded by faster and more reliable modes.
AMTOR worked in two modes : ARQ and FEC that we will see again in several other digital modes like PACTOR or MFSK16.
