LONDON (Reuters) - Anglo-U.S. fund management company Amvescap’s assets under management rose to $386.3 billion (221.1 billion pounds) at the end of December, and it said it was on course to cut operating costs by $120 million this year.
Amvescap logged a total net outflow of $16.2 billion during 2005, compared with an outflow of $19.5 billion in 2004.
Amvescap has been through difficult times due to weak performance at some of its funds and the aftermath of a costly financial scandal that was concluded by a settlement between the company and U.S. authorities in 2004.

February 28, 2001 --London-based AMVESCAP Plc announced Feb. 28 that it has signed a definitive agreement to buy independent Louisville, KY-based insti-tutional investment manager National Asset Management Co. in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at $275.0 million.
The purchase price includes an up-front payment of $200.0 million in equal amounts of cash and AMVESCAP ordinary shares, to be followed by contingent earn-out payments of up to $75.0 million.
AMVESCAP’s acquisition of National Asset Management, for which regulatory approval is pending, is scheduled to close during the second quarter.

Amvescap Plc said on Sunday it will buy W.L. Ross and Co. LLC, the investment firm run by billionaire turnaround expert Wilbur Ross, in one of the first instances of a conventional money manager combining with a private equity investor.
Amvescap said it would pay $100 million when the transaction closes, and make five annual earn-out cash payments capped at $55 million each.

To much less fanfare, UK asset management firm and Income Investor pick AMVESCAP PLC (NYSE: AVZ) agreed to purchase restructuring specialist WL Ross and Co., in a deal that could ultimately be worth $375 million over the next five years.
However, AMVESCAP's acquisition is the first one involving a major private equity group, and will be closely watched to see if it delivers synergies that go beyond capital raising.
One should note that AMVESCAP will not participate in the shared profits of existing WL Ross funds (known as the "carried interest"), and that the size of the earn-out payments for the acquisition are contingent on the size and number of new fund launches.
