 American Motors AMX
The sleek AMX turned in lap speeds of almost 175 miles an hour in Class B, for cars with engines ranging from 305 to 488 cubic inches, and over 160 miles an hour in Class C, which includes 183 to 305 cubic inch powerplants.
Sixteen records were rewritten by the larger engine Class B AMX, including three new marks for the 75-mile flying start at 174.295 m.p.h., and five new records for the 100-mile standing start at 173.044 m.p.h.
The record-smashing Class C AMX was equipped with a modified version of American Motors' 290 cubic inch V-8, bored out to 304 cubic inches, with a 4 speed transmission, for its assault on national and international marks.

The marque has been revived on a number of concept cars in the 2000s.

The AMX program was conceived in 1965, and in 1966 became "Project IV," a traveling show of prototypes that hinted at some of AMC's future production vehicles.
The first AMX prototype, with a fiberglass skin and no engine, was soon replaced by a steel-bodied, fully-operational vehicle built by Vignale, an Italian coachbuilder.
The AMX III, not to be confused with the better-known AMX/3, was essentially a Javelin station wagon.

The original AMX (American Motors eXperimental) concept was developed beginning in October 1965 in AMC's advanced styling studios under the direction of Charles Mashigan.
A steel-bodied, working AMX prototype was built by Italian coach builder Vignale in the spring of 1966 and added to the Project IV tour.
The Class C AMX was equipped with the standard AMX 290 V-8, with the standard 4-speed transmission.

It is a US-designed automobile manufactured by the former Bizzarrini factory in Turin, Italy.
As a fulfillment of earlier prototypes, the car is not well known, and as usual, information pertaining to AMC products is seeded with confusion from the disinformation wars that were started to put the smaller US car makers out of business.
(One AMX/2 spent many years in neglect mounted atop a pole for a used car dealership.) The first fully operational AMX prototype debuted as a member of AMC's AMX project in 1966, and was kept well preserved in the Talledega Speedway museum for many years.

In terms of automobile platforms, the new Spirit models introduced in 1979 -- on which the 1980 AMX is based -- were a revised version of AMC's original subcompact, the 1970 Gremlin.

With this mandate in mind the AMX was born, derived from the Javelin as a tautly styled two-seat fastback.
The engineless, fiberglass-bodied AMX prototype was sent on a ten-city tour throughout North America in 1966, along with three other AMC project cars.
The AMX handled, went fast on straights and around corners, had a distinctive and attractive appearance, was (and is) fun to drive and, in sum, was everything a good sports coupe of the time should be.

Collectible Automobile had a chance to confirm this when Teague spoke with us recently about the AMX/3 project and the yellow number-five car, which he owns, the one you see on these pages.
He had made some rear-end modifications to it, and we were curious about why.
But, of course, that's a function of the mechanicals -it's very low and it's two passenger and it's mid-engine and the engine is forward of the rear axle-so just by its mechanical layout the AMX 3 appears somewhat similar.

Early in 1966 the AMX sports car idea continued as the "AMX II" which was designed by an outside consultant.
All AMX designs had very long hoods in comparison to their truncated overall length, broad rear "sail" panels, and relatively small side glass over substantial amounts of tucked under-beltline sheetmetal.
A 327 cubic inch small block Vette was almost spot-on the AMX's 0-60 and quarter-mile times, while a 427 cubic inch big block would out-accelerate the AMX 0-60 and in the quarter mile by about a second.

 Gremlin History
The VW had proven that a new generation of Americans had a keen interest in a low-cost, economical automobile that still retained a degree of ‘style’ that would be attractive to young buyers.
Teague grabbed the nearest available piece of paper and sketched out the idea, and that very same piece of paper made it all the way back to the design studio when it was time to mock up a proposal.
Built on a short 97" wheelbase, the production AMX was a virtual twin of the Javelin from the ‘B’-pillar forward, although it also shared a rear window, trunk lid, taillight bar, and bumper with it’s Javelin parent.

It was cars like this AMX, and the concept Corvette, both mid-engined, that caused Ford to put so much pressure on DeTomaso to get the Pantera on the road (from the drawing board to the road in 9 months) as fast as possible.
Of course, the AMX, Corvette, and others, never produced their mid-engined cars, leaving the Pantera the only one to make it.
It is on display and the San Diego Automobile Museum in Balboa Park.

A new Hornet model was introduced into the existing lineup, the Hornet AMX.
The Hornet AMX was the old hatchback model with a full dress-up package that added wheel flares, rear window louvers, sport wheels, a brushed aluminum "targa" band on the it's window pillar, and a oversized hood decal.
The rest of the Hornet line was again a carry over with a a few touches to stir interest.

    In the early 1900's, automobile manufacturing was a growing business.
There was also a new AMX in 1978, based on the Concord, that was flashier than before and most didn't care for it.  Jeep sales did very well.
So well, in fact, that there were problems at the factory with quality control, which was lost in the rush to build more Jeeps.  Executives, again, were replaced in 1978.  W. Paul Tippet was named president, and Wilson Sick Jr.
