Explosive material - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Explosives are classified as low or high explosives according to their rates of decomposition: low explosives burn rapidly (or deflagrate), while high explosives undergo detonation.
The term "detonation" is used to describe an explosive phenomenon whereby the decomposition is propagated by the explosive shockwave traversing the explosive material.
A chemical explosive is a compound or mixture which, upon the application of heat or shock, decomposes or rearranges with extreme rapidity, yielding much gas and heat.

 ANFO
ANFO stands for Ammonium Nitrate / Fuel Oil, and describes a crude but effective explosive that is used by farmers to clear stumps and by the mining industry (because it is easy to pump as slurry) to break up overburden rock and expose ore in open pit mining.
ANFO was often used by the Provisional IRA in its bombing campaigns and Palestinian extremist groups.
The bomb used was only remotely based on traditional ANFO bombs though It used a sophisticated triggering sequence and compressed oxygen to achieve a larger detonation than is possible using mundane means.

In trace detection, the explosive is detected by chemical identification of microscopic residues of the explosive compound.
The low-vapor-pressure explosives do not produce enough vapor to be detected from their vapor in any but the most exceptional circumstances, and efforts to detect these compounds using trace technology must focus on swipe collection of particulate material.
Explosives in general tend to be rather sticky, and a person handling a macroscopic piece of the solid material will quickly transfer large amounts of such contamination to his or her hands.

Yet the new explosive, being liquid, could be poured into crevices in rocks, and was so useful as a blasting agent that its manufacture went on until a large vessel carrying cases of the explosive from Hamburg to Chili blew up at sea.
Although ANFO is not generally suitable for military use, since it's troublesome to store without drying out, mixtures of AN and TNT known as "amatols" were used in both WWI and WWII as a means of stretching the supply of explosives.
