ANSI art - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ANSI art is a computer artform that was widely used at one time on BBSes.
It is similar to ASCII art, but constructed from a larger set of 256 letters, numbers, and symbols — all codes found in IBM code page 437, often referred to as extended ASCII and used in MS-DOS environments.
ANSI art is considerably more flexible than ASCII art, because the particular character set it uses contains symbols intended for drawing, such as a wide variety of box-drawing characters and block characters that dither the foreground and background color.

Ansi Art - for those initiated will need little or no explanation, an obscure art form prevalent during the heyday of online Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's).
It was created using the ibm extended character sets and ansi escape codes to add color, blinking effects and sometimes animation.
Ansi Graphics Artists made due with system colors, in the day 16 or less, and individual blocks in the image roughly 20x50 pixels (about the size of a capital letter in this introduction).

Perhaps the most functional use of Ansi Art was the decoration and enhancement of menus on these Bulletin Board Systems for such things as Logons/Logoffs, navigation of local and networked message bases, and the file sections.
Ansi, as well as other Art, is still being made today by many fine artists in groups like ACiD and DARK.
These groups were around during the heyday also and some of their work from that period is included here but, the major focus of these Galleries are the individual efforts from a time when Ansi Graphics was the universal electronic folk art.

Finally, in order to explain the Ansi style a bit better, it could be summed up like this: An Ansi (or an Ascii - basically a fl and white image using mostly keyboard characters such as $ signs and so on) is an image which has a defined width, but no specific height.
