Apcor has launched a $6-million 12-month global marketing campaign "to address negative perceptions sometimes associated with the use of natural cork" and this includes the establishment of Cork Information offices in key regions including Australia, South Africa, Italy and France.
Apcor quotes research, done in January 2002 among wine drinkers in Australia, UK and USA, which it commissioned, showing that 75% expressed a preference for natural cork, with just 9% for plastic stoppers.
Apcor is eager to persuade consumers and producers that cork alone is not always to blame for wine taint and that poor quality and hygiene control in bottle manufacturing and the bottling process can increase the chances of contamination.

Balzac quotes Elisa Pedro, Director of Communication & International Relations for APCOR (Portuguese Cork Association), absurdly insinuating “this is another endorsement for cork closures”, and that ‘Spanish lawmakers are responding to wine drinkers with this law’.
APCOR is notorious for it’s one-sided marketing and twisting of facts, it’s surprising they had enough credibility to entice a U.S. PR firm to continue promoting their facade.

In June 2002, APCOR received a total of $2.3 million from the Portuguese government and private cork producers.
Implemented in Portugal by APCOR, the code outlines measures to be adopted in the forests, during the production process and in the transportation of cork stoppers.
According to APCOR public relations representative Joana Mesquita, the positive effects of the new code will become evident in two or three years, after cork producers have put the guidelines into practice.

If I were running APCOR I would not spend a single cent on downstream consumer marketing until I had managed and mitigated all of the risk that I could via research on actual rate of incidence, and subsequent testing on the elimination of TCA in corks.

Fed up with tainted corks ruining some of their finest bottles, eager to reach more consumers, and inspired by studies out of Australia and California suggesting the once-humble screw cap offers better quality control for some wines, wineries are contemplating ditching corks for the easy-off tops.
Citing a new study by Britain's Wine and Spirit Association, APCOR says the actual rate of spoilage is far lower than some wine industry figures say, and that spoilage from other causes sometimes gets blamed on cork.
APCOR adds an independent study it commissioned shows consumers have an overwhelming preference for wine sealed with cork — perhaps something for wine producers to keep in mind.

 APCOR Research Shows Consumers "Prefer Real Cork"
A total of 69 percent of wine drinkers believe that a real cork is a sign of a quality wine--rising as high as 83 percent in the US and 79 per cent in Australia.
In perhaps the most surprising revelation, the 'type of closure' was ranked as the fourth most important factor in wine choice with 26 percent of respondents claiming it was a 'very important factor'.
Francisco de Brito Evangelista, the director of APCOR's International Campaign for Cork, commented: "This research revealed some facts that we have know for some time - that, ultimately, consumers still prefer natural cork stoppers for their wine and that real cork is still viewed as a indication of a quality wine.

In May, APCOR announced during the London International Wine and Spirits Fair that the funds would be spent over a two-year period to subsidise independent research by various organisations worldwide, such as the Australian Wine Research Institute, to find a solution to TCA.
Francisco de Brito Evangelista, the director for APCOR’s International Campaign for Cork, told Grapegrower and Winemaker that five areas of research had already been identified to receive a share of the funding, but these were primarily of interest for cork producers.
He said APCOR also wanted to ensure that the research program reflected the concerns and interests of the wine industry.
