Topic: APILAS

  APILAS@Everything2.com
APILAS -- supposedly short for Armor PIercing Light Arm System, but I haven't managed to confirm this -- is a heavy disposable rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher designed specifically for taking out tanks.
The APILAS is manufactured by GIAT Industries of France and has been quite a hit in the anti-tank community, with over 100,000 units sold.
There are several variants of APILAS available, most notably the ABB "APILAS Bunker Buster" which can punch a hole in up to two meters of reinforced concrete.

 Tanknet > Israeli AFV
The armor-piercing effect of APILAS is based on a special shaped charge grenade which, on impact, explodes and releases a high-speed, carrot-shaped molten metal burst.
APILAS is after all a single shot weapon, and if it was a reloadable weapon, there would be a need for a supply of granades for it to keep fighting.
APILAS is not meant to be a general infantry anti-tank weapon in the same way as for example AT-4 or M72.

 French Rocket Launchers
The launcher uses the Davis Countershot principle, ejecting a mass of plastic beads from the rear of the launcher to reduce firing signature and eliminate recoil.
The launcher is equipped with a bipod to steady the launcher.
Notes: Another French antiarmor launcher, Sabracan was developed to be a lighter, cheaper counterpart to the APILAS ATGM.
