The APS Underwater Assault Rifle is a derivative of the AK47, designed in the Soviet Union in the early 1970's for use underwater by frogmen or combat swimmers.
As a result, this rifle fires a steel bolt caliber 5.66mm (especially designed for this rifle and is often mistaken as 5.56mm) and 120 mm (4.75 in) long.
The APS has more stopping power against anti-frogman dolphins, but for most underwater fights, Russian commando frogmen prefer the pistol, which is more compact and easier to store away.

The APS is designed for special underwater cartridges, which fire 5.66 mm needle-like projectiles 120 mm long.
The APS itself is a relatively crude, smoothbore arm, with a gas operated, rotating bolt action, fired from an open bolt.
According to the available sources, the expected service life of the APS when fired "in the air" degrades severely, and the effective range is limited only to several tens of meters.

The designers began with the Kalashnikov rifle as the basis for their work, but quickly found that although the AK would work underwater, the bullets had virtually no effective range and suffered from gross inaccuracy.
The APS fires from the open bolt to allow the barrel to fill with water, which is necessary to its reliable operation with the rod-shaped bullets it fires.
The range of the APS is dependent on the depth at which it is fired: the deeper, the shorter the effective range.

APS Underwater Assault Rifle 5.56 mm - Definition, explanation
The APS Underwater Assault Rifle (5.56 mm) is a derivative of the AK47, designed and made in Russia in the early 1970's for use underwater by frogmen.
Its range decreases with increasing depth, presumably due to increasing backward suction caused by cavitation behind the projectile.
This is useful in such situations as shooting through reinforced drysuits, and protective (not air-holding) helmets, and thick tough parts of breathing sets and their harnesses, and plastic casings and transparent covers of some small underwater vehicles.

The latter design, based on the Finnish Valmet Rk.62 assault rifle (a license-built AK-47 clone), eventually won the competition and was selected as a new IDF assault rifle in the 1973, but its actual adoption was delayed by the next Israeli-Arab Yom Kippur war of the 1973.
M16 rifles became the major armament of the IDF, with the Galils mostly issued to the Armored corps, Artillery corps and some units of the Israeli Air Forces.
