The history of the ARM CPU
ARM Ltd was founded with a clear mission to continue the development of the ARM processor and to facilitate its use by system developers, whether as a standalone processor or as a macrocell with custom logic or other ARM components added to it to make a custom chip.
ARM Ltd now has offices in California and Japan in order to maintain a close relationship with licensees and their major customers, and to promote existing ARM devices and the company's ability to produce new ones to future customers.
ARM Ltd's own mythology is that virtually all the chips they have designed have worked first time; a row of champagne bottles, each opened to celebrate the arrival of working silicon, lines the staircase at ARM Ltd's barn to bear witness to this.

ARM architecture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ARM CPUs are found in all corners of consumer electronics, from portable devices (PDAs, mobile phones, media players, handheld gaming units, and calculators) to computer peripherals (hard drives, desktop routers).
ARM has implemented a technology that allows certain of their architectures to execute Java bytecode natively in hardware, as another execution mode.
ARM Ltd does not manufacture and sell CPU devices based on their own designs, but rather, licenses the processor architecture to interested parties.

The number Goodacre used to illustrate his paper was four, to which ARM would add buses and logic to ensure each processor's level-one cache coherency, provide interprocessor communications and debug facilities, plus the logic to power down individual processors when not required.
The ARM multiprocessing trial platform is a four-processor device with a single AMBA bus and a trigger and trace bus to help with debugging and system integration.
In April, ARM announced that it was working with LSI Logic Inc. and ParthusCeva Inc. to develop a specification that addresses the integration of DSP cores with ARM and other microprocessor cores in system-on-chip (SoC) designs.

Arm, NEC to develop multiprocessor core | InfoWorld | News | 2003-10-20 | By Tom Krazit, IDG News Service   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Arm doesn't manufacture processors; it designs the central processing units, also known as cores, that chip vendors license and build into a working processor with memory buses and I/O connections.
Arm licensees have used the company's designs in processors with multiple cores, but this would be the first time Arm has developed a core with multiple processing units, Rayfield said.
Arm's traditional customers, cell phone and personal digital assistant chip makers, will also be able to take advantage of the cores, he said.
