ARP Instruments, Inc. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ARP Instruments, Inc. was an early electronic music company founded by Alan Robert Pearlman, best known for its line of synthesizers that emerged in the early 1970s.
Throughout the 1970's ARP were the main competitor to Moog in the field of musically useful synthesisers.
There were two main camps - the Minimoog players and the ARP Odyssey / ARP 2600 players - with both proponents dedicated to their choice in a very similar manner to the ongoing PC versus Apple debate.

The ARP 2600 V is a soft synthesiser from French wizz-kids Arturia that recreates the sound of the legendary 1970s synth and adds a whole stack of modern day enhanced features.
Because of this, the 2600 was quite popular with US schools and universities as a teaching aid for the principles of sound - in fact, ARP were keen to promote it as an educational tool and it was partly designed with that in mind.
ARP chose sliders over knobs because they thought that sliders were far better for 'seeing' the sound (much like a graphic equaliser is good for 'seeing' an EQ shape).

ARP 2600 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ARP 2600 is a professional, semi-modular monophonic patch-cable synthesizer marketed by ARP Instruments, Inc. that competed directly against the first professional modular Moog synths during the early 1970's.
Unlike other modular systems of the time which required one to pick and choose modules which had to be mounted inside a case and wired together, the 2600 was semi-modular with a fixed selection of basic synth modules internally pre-wired and ready to go.
A few versions of the 2600 were produced during its lifetime throughout the 1970's.

ARP (which is named after the 2600’s inventor, Alan R. Pearlman) also manufactured a modular synth, the 2500, but that was primarily used in the university scene.
The ARP 2600 was a patchable synth: it could be programmed with patch cords at a moments notice, but in actuality, had many of the routings pre-patched so the user could move some sliders and start rockin’.
The original 2600 had a spring reverb, which is replicated here, and hiding behind what in the original were 2 speakers are a couple of new additions: a chorus and delay on the left and a tracking generator (you can do some neat modulation routings here) on the right.

ARP later replaced this with the ARP 3620, a sophisticated duophonic unit that provided single- and multi-triggering plus a flexible triple-output LFO with delay.
However, as found elsewhere in TimewARP 2600, the waveforms are a bit too close to the ideals and, unlike the 3620, TimewARP's LFO sine wave is gated by the keyboard — on the original, it is free running and ever-present at its output, which is much more flexible.

"ARP's founder, Alan R. Pearlman, recognized the importance of teaching musicians how to use the technology, so he designed a new instrument with a fixed selection of basic synthesizer functions.
This instrument, dubbed the Model 2600, was an integrated system with the signal generating and processing functions in one box and the keyboard in another.
The functionality was borrowed from the original ARP modules [from the 2500], but instead of using matrix switches (which were expensive and bulky) for patching, Pearlman devised a system of factory-installed 'normal' connections between the modules.

ARP claimed in their tech literature that the filters would go from 16Hz to 16kHz, but most 4072s will not go beyond 11 or 12kHz because, unfortunately, some circuit values were incorrectly calculated.
The first major artist to incorporate a 2600 into his act was Edgar Winter, who employed an extra-long cord to the keyboard so he could wear it like a guitar and roam about the stage while playing “Frankenstein.”.

2600 V can be installed on a PC running Windows 98SE/2000/XP; on a Macintosh, it runs on Mac OS X. Although the user interface is relatively simple (there are fewer than 20 total menu items), the app needs a fairly new system for optimum performance.
Like the original, ARP2600 V is semimodular; the different modules are internally prewired so that patch cords are unnecessary to produce sound, yet a plethora of patching jacks is present for endless restructuring, and patching is as simple as a click-and-drag from one jack to another.
All components of the original ARP are present, including three VCOs; one VCF; a VCA; a synchable LFO; two envelopes; sample and hold; an envelope follower; ring mod; a sweepable noise generator; and all of the proper switches, pots and schematic-style graphics.
