ARP Odyssey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ARP Odyssey was an analog synthesizer introduced in 1972.
One potential appeal of the Odyssey is the fact that all parameters, including a resonant low-pass filter, a non-resonant high-pass filter, ADSR and AR envelopes, triangle (not sine) and square wave LFO and a sample-and-hold function, are editable with sliders and buttons on the front panel.
Arp and Moog came to an amicable agreement and a small licensing fee was paid by ARP for units previously manufactured.

 ARP Odyssey
The Odyssey was clearly derived from the 2600 and had two audio oscillators, a white/pink noise generator, a ring modulator, a resonant lowpass filter, a (non-resonant) highpass filter, an AR and an ADSR envelope, an LFO and a very flexible sample+hold unit which, more than anything, proved the Odyssey's modular heritage.
You see, ARP had pretty much copied the famous Moog 'ladder' filter in their ARP4035 filter design and this was used in early versions of the the company's 2600 modular synth.
ARP's market was dwindling under the onslaught of cheaper (but capable) synths from Roland, Yamaha and Korg as well as new models from old rivals Moog and whilst the competition were introducing new synths with ever more features and functionality, ARP were pretty much standing still.

 ARP2500
Overview The ARP 2500 modular synthesizer was developed as direct competitor to Bob's Moog Modular, which had made such a massive impact in 1968 - 69 after "Switched on Bach" launched the analog synthesizer into the publics imagination.
The ARP 2600 (1971) and Odyssey(1972) can trace their circuits back to 2500 modules, such as the Moog copy filter (4012 module) and the internal transistor clocks.
For many years the ARP 2500 circuits were a mystery, and it is only recently that schematics have finally been located and made available on the web.

The Quadra was a cumbersome and expensive instrument developed at the end of the ARP companies existence. The Quadra was marketed to compete against a new generation of polyphonic synthesisers but was essentially a glossily packaged hybrid of an ARP Oni and a Solus.

ARP Instruments, Inc. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ARP Instruments, Inc. was an early electronic music company founded by Alan Robert Pearlman, best known for its line of synthesizers that emerged in the early 1970s.
The ARP technician sent to install the unit, Phil Dodds, was cast as the musician who plays the alien tones on the synthesizer.

Later ARP models (such as the Odyssey II's and the 3620 2-note keyboards for the ARP 2600) used 2-bus keyboards supplying the control voltage and gate signals with the trigger signal being derived from the gate.

ARP had a promising first product, but it was entering a volatile and risky market in which it had no expertise.
Instead, ARP embarked on the most ambitious and dangerous product-development project it had ever undertaken, one that intensified and underscored the rivalry within the executive committee.

 ARPFilters
The core design was patented by ARP in 1976 and it appeared in the early white faced Odyssey, manufactured from 1974 - 1975.This filter has a very smooth behaviour, and unlike most 4-pole filters, does not attenuate the low end with increased resonance settings.
ARP 4072 This is a 4-pole low pass filter based around a cascade of integrators.
ARP 4075 This filter is nealy identical to the 4072, and it was the standard ARP filter in 1976 - 1977, appearing in the Mk3 Odyssey, Axxe, Omni, Avatar, Quadra, etc.

The ARP 2500, whose most well-known appearance was in the motion picture Close Encounters of the Third Kind, was unique because it used a series of matrix switches instead of patchcables to define signal and voltage paths.
The smaller ARP Odyssey synthesizer lacked patching capabilities but, thanks in part to its portability, became popular with many musicians.
ARP folded shortly after releasing the ARP Avatar, a guitar synth which unfortunately didn't sell as well as they'd hoped.
