 Encyclopedia: ASCII
ASCII is, strictly, a seven-bit code, meaning that it uses the bit patterns representable with seven binary digits (a range of 0 to 127 decimal) to represent character information.
At the time ASCII was introduced, many computers dealt with eight-bit groups (bytes or, more specifically, octets) as the smallest unit of information; the eighth bit was commonly used as a parity bit for error checking on communication lines or other device-specific functions.
ASCII reserves the first 32 codes (numbers 0–31 decimal) for control characters: codes originally intended not to carry character information, but rather to control devices (such as printers) that make use of ASCII.

Shift-JIS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shift_JIS (SJIS) is a character encoding for the Japanese language developed by a Japanese company called ASCII and adopted by, amongst others, Microsoft.
The lead bytes for the double byte characters are "shifted" around the 64 halfwidth katakana characters in the single-byte range 0xA0 to 0xDF.
The single-byte characters 0x00 to 0x7F match the ASCII encoding (unrelated to the ASCII company mentioned earlier!), except for a Yen sign at 0x5C and an overline at 0x7E in place of the ASCII character set's backslash and tilde respectively.

Wired 1.05: The Comeback of Japanese Software Entrepreneur Kay Nishi
Last summer, his company - ASCII Corporation - was on the verge of collapse under a mountain of debt.
Then, at the eleventh hour, ASCII (after the standard code for text) was rescued by a group of six banks led by the powerful Industrial Bank of Japan (IBJ), egged-on by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
Speculation that ASCII would not survive the split with Microsoft was soon dispelled by ASCII's own rapid growth as a software-publishing powerhouse.

 SEC Publisher: Whitepaper
For example, a company's Annual Report to Shareholders - usually a state-of-the-company report - and its Prospectus - which contains the basic business and financial information on an issuer with respect to a particular securities offering - are both required to be filed with the SEC.
Until recently, this has meant that a company generating documents for filing and for general information has had to prepare them for print dissemination, convert them to ASCII for filing with the SEC, as well as to HTML and often PDF for display on a corporate web site.
These capabilities mean that a company can repurpose an original financial document for filing with the SEC or for dissemination on its own web site in one efficient process.

From company profile page at IGN: "Originally founded by industry legend Kazuhiko Nishi, the ASCII Corporation first began its life in Japan when Nishi partnered with NEC executive Kazuya Watanabe in an effort to create the first home computer for the Japanese market.
In fact, so popular was ASCII's presence in the software market that it branched out and created an American satellite in 1991 known as ASCII Entertainment.
Eventually, ASCII's hold in the market began to wane in Japan, while continuing to pick up steam in the U.S. To better focus on supporting the interactive entertainment channel in America, startup company Agetec was spun off as an independent corporation in 1998 and later became a fully independent publisher one year later.
