ASCII art is an excellent modern representation of the Zen Aesthetic which has been predominant in Japanese culture for centuries.
ASCII is essentially the molding of this empty space to evoke, though never clearly describe, an image, and this evocation is at the heart of Oriental Spirituality.
Certainly, ASCII art is not a form of calligraphy, as the characters do not in and of themselves have any particular value, whereas the historical roots of Japanese characters are in "Shokeimoji," the early imitative drawings found in early Japanese life.

ASCII art has become common only in the last decade or so, but has been around even before it was called by its current name.
Line-style ASCII art is made primarily of thin characters, such as the parentheses, comma, period, slash, hyphen, underscore, and apostrophe.
Grayscale art uses characters of different sizes when different light densities are required; thus, an M is used for a very dark part of a picture and a period, say, for a lighter part.

In the standard ASCII character set, the first 32 values are assigned to communication and printer control codes—nonprinting characters, such as backspace, carriage return, and tab—that are used to control the way information is transferred from one computer to another or from a computer to a printer.
Although ASCII lacks both the accent marks and the special characters used in European languages and is unable to represent characters in non-Roman alphabets used in many languages, it is internationally important because it is the most universal character-coding system.

As for the content within these two tags, ASCII art is generally characterized by one or more occurrences of 4 or more consecutive use of the same character.
One pattern I noticed is that when the ASCII art is small (displayed in less than 10 lines) mostly non-alphabetical characters are used in its art.
ASCII art can not be defined by one particular pattern/rule but by many rules.

As with ANSI art, SJIS art is sometimes used for animation.
Unlike Western ASCII art, which is generally designed to be viewed with a monospace font, Shift_JIS art is designed around the proportional-width MS PGothic font supplied with Microsoft Windows, which is the default font for web sites in Japanese versions of Windows.
This dependency has led to the development of the free Mona Font, each character of which is the same width as its counterpart in MS PGothic, for the use of users of other operating systems such as Linux and non-Japanese-capable versions of Windows.
